The book chosen for this assignment was Molly and the Shipwreck, written by Malachy Doyle and illustrated by Andrew Whitson. This book sees the main character molly help a mother and her children who are in need of shelter and food. Molly is able to deeply demonstrate the importance of helping others and showing that poverty is a huge problem in todays world. The message that is given throughout this book is one of kindness and it portrays a vital memo for all children who avail and use this book to help others when they are in need.

The Sustainable Development Goal which was chosen for this assignment was number 1, which speaks about no poverty and how it shouldn’t be in any form anywhere in the world. (Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2023). This SDG is clearly seen throughout the book as the main theme of the book is how Molly helps a family who are in need of shelter and food.

The first activity was done using wallpaper, chalk, string, scissors and crayons to create an underwater scene. As the book is set in an ocean, where Molly saves a family from a shipwreck, the children were able to create a recycled art project using recycled materials. The main component of the project was wallpaper that was no longer being used. The children were able to cut, rip and tear the paper apart as they wish to create different things which they would see under sea. They were also asked about what kind of wildlife, sea creatures and animals they might see under water and made whatever they could think of.

The children were able to use leaves which they had gathered outside to create another underwater picture. The children went outside to the outdoor area and collected the leaves that they wanted to use for their art. They used the shape of the leaves to create the fish’s body, and used crayons to draw the tails. There was glue sticks provided and they were able to stick each leaf onto the page and use the crayons to draw a tail for each fish. As each child had picked a different leaf, everyone’s creations were unique to themselves.

Towards the end of the book, we see a lot of different people in the classroom which shows the diversity of people in every setting of life. Using dried pasta, the children were able to create self-portraits of themselves. They were given different kinds of pasta to create their hair, and used a glue stick to stick the pasta in a way which was unique to themselves. They were also given crayons, chalk and paper in addition to the pasta and glue sticks to complete their activities. In the book, the children had different kinds of hair colours, textures and skin colours, all of which is important for children to learn about how everyone is different.

Using a sock, buttons and wool, the children were able to create puppets to recreate and enact the story or any way the children might extend and use the characters to create further stories themselves. They used glue to stick the materials onto the sock and created a puppet of their choice. The book covers a variety of topics such as friendship, school and the ocean which children can use to create and imagine other scenarios. It is important for the children to also understand how vital it is to use recyclable materials to create objects and toys to play with. They can learn many essential lessons from using these materials and relating them to the books and stories they may hear.

The final activity that the children participated in was using rocks and stones that the children had collected outside to create a house like the one that the children encountered in the story. The children also washed their stones and rocks to make sure they were clean when they are making their house. Crayons were provided for the children to do a drawing of their house first, if they wanted, before sticking the stones and rocks on. They used paper and glue as well to finish their creation. The house in the story is made of stone and the children were able to create similar homes, however, each one was unique to each child. The stones and rocks which they collected varied in size, shape and colour, showing the children the uniqueness of each material they used. As well as this, the children were also able to see that they are able to use materials that are easily available to them and can create many different projects from these materials as well.
