An identity that takes over her life as she starts to gain single stories about many different ideas.  This is why once she rejects the single story she is able to regain a kind of paradise but with a cost, as it starts to take a toll on herself,  mentally and physically. We see this at the start, when she has been told all her life about the Nameless ones, and how there should be no light in the Tombs of Atuan, this single story develops through her life as it is  repeated over and over again.  But once this single story is broken she starts to break mentally and physically this is shown when Ged Sparrowhawk arrives at the tombs. He is the first to bring a light to the tombs, this facisantes Arha as she “Spent the night going silent and without a lantern, from one spyhole to another”, as she “slept very little that night”(82), just showing how when a single story is broken she became fascinated and curios with it. But it also came with negative emotions as because of this idea of no light in the tombs, she called Ged a “thief”, as she imprisoned him. This single story connects directly to the conflict and resolution she faced at the end of the book, with her identity and the duality of her life, as the single story of her life of Arha, interferes with the life of Tenar, as it destroys her. This conflict starts when she and Ged, as they start to develop a relationship, but as Kossill starts to get curious of Ged she needs to fake his death, so as Manan brings him away he states “Take care, Tenar”(114). These 3 words caused her to have this duality in her life, this stillness, and indecisiveness. As she tries to balance these two identities.  Ged sees the indecisiveness Tenar faced and states “You must be Arha, or you must be Tenar. You cannot be both”(138) and said to either come with him away from the tombs or stay there. As she replies “I will come with you”(139). This decision wasn’t so binary as it seemed, as once escaped through the Tombs she felt major grief towards the death of Manan and the loss of so much of her life. As “she turned upon the man, the knife held back in her right hand”(170) threating his life. As she had doubts, the tombs being destroyed down to ruins, and the people she ruled as Arha, killed, she turned on him. Showing how this imbalance and change of her single story has negative drawbacks, as her whole life as Arha ruined her mental state, and due to the change of this identity she did not know who to trust. Showing how dangerous a single story can be, as even though she is free from the rules and shackles of her life as Arha, it came with a price as she did not know who to trust and what to do with her life.

We see this all throughout the book by the use of her motifs and symbols, as she uses the idea of light and dark, and stillness, to portray her identity as it shifts over time. The labyrinth and the under tombs are big parts of the story and it symbolizes Arha or Tenar’s identity. As at the start Arha whole identity was built off darkness, she was the manifestation of evil and darkness, and the labyrinth did not have light and “if she carried a lantern” “she extinguished it”(67), showing how her identity of Arha was just Arha, and not Tenar. But as Ged Sparrowhawk comes into the story, “He had made light where light was forbidden”(70), and as this light was illuminated in the tombs, Arha was flabbergasted as nothing like that has ever happened before. This light from Ged symbolizes, Geds importance and influence towards Arha, as he shines a small light on the darkness that is the tombs or her identity. Later in the book she starts to learn more and more about Tenar, and the identity of that name. The motif and symbols of darkness and light is very important as it symbolizes the identity of Arha, as she starts to learn who she is, and what is her purpose. At the end of the book, one symbol and motif that is very relevant is the lantern, as Ged said “I cannot tell you that You are like a lantern swathed and overed, hidden away in a dark place”(130), this symbol is a direct representation of Tenar’s identity, as it was taken away from her, covered in all the name, and roles of Arha. This duality of her identities becomes more and more apparent as Ged gives her the opportunity to leave and become Tenar, or stay and become Arha. After little deliberation she picks to become Tenar, but it soon hits her as she starts to have doubts. But by the end of the book, she might not know the path she will take, but she now knows who she is and has the freedom to be anyone she wants to be. This story of Tenar’s identity shows many similarities with human life, as she learns to be her true self, and that even though it was hidden her true identity will always come through. That even though this book is fantasy it is still true and teaches us a valuable lesson.

Tenar was able to regain freedom, but she lost all the people that helped her build her life as Arha. She feels regret leaving everyone behind and killing Manan because he was the only person that would comfort her. She took this rish in order to be free of the darkness and shine in the light.

As throughout the book Arha starts to learn more about her life as Tenar, and the identity it faces. As she tries to balance the two lives, she learns that she cannot only be one self as Ged stated “You must be Arha, or you must be Tenar. You cannot be both”(138), as she picks the life of Tenar, it takes a toll on her but she realizes the life that was taken away, and the future that presents her. Looking at the book this way,  I can see many similarities with my own life. As I am still young, I am always asked the question “what do you want to do when you grow up?”, and my response is always “I don't know”. Because this idea of growing and changing is scary for me,  as for me it puts a lot of pressure on myself to do well or pick something that would make me happy. This idea of changing was very scary to me, because there are many things I love, but there is nothing specifically that calls for me, and picking a role that I wouldn’t like is scary. And I think this is what Arha was feeling when making a decision on her identities, and how she did not want to make the wrong decision. As life can be short, and time is very valuable, and losing  many years of your life on something that was worthless, is a terrifying mistake. And this was shown in the book, as Tenar started to cry when she realized the many years lost in her life at the Tombs, following certain orders. We also learned that change is hard in our life. Sometimes when you make a change you will feel regret and want to go back to your own life. This is very relevant in our world because some people can’t change, and some people have the power to change. We can’t get it mixed up because change isn’t always good and benefits us or the people around us. As you change, some people around you won’t want to be with you because they haven’t changed.

We are blinded by the other side of reading. And that change of learning to read, and then learning to read is a big change in our educational careers. Arha started out as not knowing anything about the world. As she grew older she became curious when she met Ged. This relates to us because when we start reading to learn we get to explore more things and become more curious.
