Just her and him. Just him and her. They don't need anything more to be happy. But lately, Ali has begun to notice how his great-grandmother has aged. And one day, he asks if her life's dreams have come true. All except one, she tells him. She had a dream to see the sea, but now she is too old to go. Ali brings the ocean to his great-grandmother in this beautiful story. The illustrations in this book are not many, but they go along with the story line's setting (a desert). However, the language barrier between them both is a problem. Through fantasy and magic, both characters find a common ground in art and story telling. They are able to bond through a fantasy in which they fight off a creature together. This book would be great to use in primary grades when exploring cultural barriers and how to overcome them. This would be a great add to the fantasy genre that 2nd graders would enjoy. In this book, the main character, Beatrice, tells how the rope has been used starting from her grandmother, to her mother, to herself.

Awards: Stonewall Book Award for Children’s Literature (2019). Jane Adams Children’s Book Award (2019).

In Julian Is a Mermaid, Julian sees some women on the train that look like they are dressed lavishly like mermaids. When he goes home, he decides to dress up and put on makeup to look like them because he wants to be like them. The grandmother in the story helps Julian feel comfortable and accepts what Julian has does. At the end, she takes Julian to a festival where others are dressed like mermaids, just like him. The illustrations in this book show dark and bright watercolors to portray each characters mermaid attire. This book would be a great addition to diverse literature, culturally and being inclusive of others.

For additional information:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763690457/ref=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin?ie=UTF8&tag=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0763690457&SubscriptionId=1MGPYB6YW3HWK55XCGG2
<del>
</del>https://jesslove.format.com/about<del>
</del>

Active American. Fry bread is used to identify them as human beings, the injustices they’ve been through, and the values that hold them together after so long. Illustrations in this story show the unity of the family through the use of water colors. This beautiful book can be used to teach students about new cultures they are not familiar with in the cultural section of the library.

For additional information:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1626727465/ref=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin?ie=UTF8&tag=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1626727465&SubscriptionId=1MGPYB6YW3HWK55XCGG2

https://www.kevinmaillard.com/

Awards: (No awards as of yet)

In this book, the main character, Gustavo is shy, and some things are harder for him to do, like getting in a line to buy eye scream or making friends with other monsters. Whenever he tries getting close to them, he realizes they just can’t see him. Now that the Day of the Dead is fast approaching, Gustavo decides to throw a party. The illustrations in this book can be things in common with EL’s cultural background. This book would be a great addition to the sci-fi section on the classroom library.

For additional information:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1536211141/ref=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin?ie=UTF8&tag=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1536211141&SubscriptionId=1MGPYB6YW3HWK55XCGG2
https://www.flaviazdrago.com/

Award: Caldecott Medal Nominee 2014, Massachusetts Book Award Nominee for Children’s Picture Book 2014

Journey, follows the adventures of a young girl who escapes the boredom of home to find a magical realm – in which she draws a door that lets her into a magical new world. In this new world, she does different things, like riding a magical carpet and going on different adventure. This is a great book for the sci-if section of the classroom library. Since the book has no words, the illustrations can be discussed in depth with students. The author does a great job at making meaning of what is going on with the use of illustrations, even if there are no words!

For additional information:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0763660531/ref=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin?ie=UTF8&tag=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0763660531&SubscriptionId=1MGPYB6YW3HWK55XCGG2
