10 Tips for Teaching English Language Learners

This article is simply what the title is. 10 tips of how to help in teaching ELL students. The ones that I feel are most essential are knowing your students. Every teacher should know something about their student, even if they are ELL students or not. Having a personal connection to them helps them see that they should be excited for class. Another great tip is to have the students SWRL. Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening to the English language daily. Those daily steps help people learn any language.

In this article, both the pros and cons of multicultural education are shown. One major pro to this certain type of education is the reduction of fear, ignorance and detachment from other cultures. If someone is taught to accept and love every ethnicity, that person would grow up with a greater look at life. A con of multicultural education is that if you try and change how the system is for other cultures, most people will resent it. They believe that nothing should be changed.

A video created by Cynthia Rios and Allison Ryan, it shows different ways to help teach and support students learning English. They show the reason that ELL is needed for students that are struggling. According to their video, it could take up to 7 years for a ELL to learn the language fully. Material is given too quickly by normal teaching methods and that oral presentations are the only way it is taught for the most part. There are many methods on how to teach a ELL and this video shows you each individually.

1. I love what Amber Prentice was doing with her class. Having them answer a question at the beginning of every class. Then they would go through a strict schedule to keep structure. She said with new students, she would prepare the classroom for the student and help them adjust as smoothly as possible.
2. SWRL, what a great acronym. Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening are the best ways to learning a language. Using this to help children retain the English language is what works.
3. Visual aids are a great way to help teach. Images to help show what something is, physical items are good to use also. Anything to help relate the word, sentence, story being taught and give it a visual to help the lesson be retained.
