I would like to know of any parents that are lawyers so that they could possibly assist in our mock trial in social studies. We need them to come for multiple visits, so knowing the time of day they that works for them would be helpful. We have the flexibility to move our classes around to accommodate them, but just need that information. We could actually Skype with them, but I prefer having them live.

I would like to see females on the list that can talk about careers in science and math. We have a lot of physician moms in our neighborhood. We expect our high school students to choose career paths when choosing courses, but we do little to expose them to actual careers. Candace, we had a mom in kinder a few years back that was a scientist. She would do such cool experiments with my kids. She works for Chevron, I believe.

I added a line on the student information form I created with this in mind: What interest or skill do you have that you'd be willing to share with kids? Obviously, knowing the times they are available would be helpful. Our newsletter with short blurbs about what was coming was often a jumping off point. Parents want to share, but need to know where it fits into our curriculum.
Also, I agree with Lou Ann that females who are experts in science/math would be great! I had moms in my room last year who are engineers, a physician, an accountant, and an aquatic biologist/biology teacher. One time, the biology teacher sent in a big tub of shells and a powerpoint that I used to teach about the shells.
All the above were great resources and they enjoyed working with kids. We had to be flexible with scheduling at times, but it was totally worth it.

I agree with Lou Ann...it would be cool if we had some kind of database where teachers could utilize all RCE parents. I also agree with her in regards to exposing our kids at a young age to as many career choices as possible. It will be super helpful as they get to high school and have to choice a career path. I have used parents in my classroom in the past to come in to my room and share their passion or job choice ...the results are amazing, not to mention how much the kids absolutely love it! We are very lucky at Rummel Creek to have so many working parents with important jobs that are willing to come in and share when asked...we need to ask more often.

I have always thought that this is a great way to utilize our community support. For Junior Achievement this year, we had two parents teach our kids and the kiddos loved it. It changed up the classroom environment. I have had several friends even ask if there was a way they could come in and share about their field (engineers, lawyers, etc.). A lawyer friend was wanting to come in and do a mock trial (he is started planning how it could relate to our TEKS). If we did some sort of career day once every few weeks, the kids passion projects could be even richer!
