I decided to concentrate on Susanna Martin because her trial distills both the high anxiety and the not-so-good legal reasoning that characterized the Salem Witch Trials. In Cotton Mather's telling, Martin answered the charges against her with the kind of righteous indignation that would be expected from someone who was not guilty. She was said to have done harm to a number of people who seemed afflicted, and she was accused of using witchcraft. The trial also used physical reactions such as the "Cast of her Eye", as supposed evidence of her guilt, demonstrating how irrational fears led to disastrous consequences. Martin was found guilty despite her not-so-great representation.

“Magistrate: But what do you think ails them? Martin: I don't desire to spend my Judgment upon it.”

This back-and-forth exchange brings out two key things. One is the absence of any logical basis for the claims made. The other is the heavy reliance on interpretations that are more driven by fear than by anything else.
