What reading OR speaking position are we being asked to take?

We are asked to take the speaking position of women. In the image, seen is a man wearing a hat. This accessory symbolizes power. Together with the man’s pose of putting his finger over his lip suggesting he wants silence, the image shows how men tell women not to speak up because of machismo and the systemic problem of society regarding the worth and role of women. This is then addressed by the text being spoken from women’s perspective, heavily emphasizing “Your” which emphasizes who this text is addressed to, and “silence” which shows women’s disgust against this prejudice-rooted preference.

(Culture, Identity, Community: Influence of traditional gender norms on the treatment of women)
One of the first and greatest triumphs in gender equality happened around a century ago when women’s suffrage was finally approved. This, along with other strides made in women’s rights, slowly made it clear that society was taking steps in erasing gender stereotypes and prejudices from centuries worth of systemic sexism. However, here we are about a century after, still having sexism and gender inequality integrated into some cultures.

In the 1980s, there were seemingly big milestones made in gender equality. It was the first time a woman served the US Supreme Court. This was also the decade when the first American woman was sent to space. Although having these individual women achieve so much, the general political and social aspect of feminism and gender equality in the US at the time was still heavily influenced by traditional constructs. The President was one that did not support nor understand what feminism activists were standing for including topics like abortion . His perception of how a relationship should be between a man and a waoman was very traditional and conservative.

The 1980s was a time of great success but also of unexpected setbacks. These setbacks aren’t things to be tolerated as just part of the process. Women have been waiting to be treated fairly and equally for centuries. This is why Kruger made those artworks. Despite the 80s being a progressive time, major aspects women still find as issues in society were ignored, if not worsened. Your Comfort is my Silence and Untitled are both works that convey the sentiment of women in the context of the progress of feminism and gender equality. However “Your Body is a Wonderland” shows women how the process won’t be easy but women are strong enough to endure and face the challenges if it means ending centuries worth of prejudice.
