FM Systems: personal listening devices which often include microphone worn around the teachers neck. The microphone connects to the hearing impaired student's cochlear implant or hearing aid. This technology allows hearing impaired students to hear their teacher's voice louder and clearer.

*TIP* Teachers should be aware to not wear loose jewelry that might hit against the FM system because it could potentially be distracting and unpleasant for your student.

Although students usually have the ability to monitor noise level, teachers should also be cognizant to not raise voice to a level that would be unpleasant for student wearing the ear piece.

A hearing impairment/disability characterizes a full or partial decrease in a person's ability to detect and understand sounds. Therefore, a hearing impairment can be debilitating and frustrating for a student in the classroom and stop them from achieving their maximum potential if not recognized and given support by parent, teacher, and school district.
