Geek, we are so familiar with it especially when we were in high school or even in the colleges. Usually, people love to divide into groups and gangs in schools, they love to identify themselves as a particular group of people such as nerds, dorks, dweeb or even the Geek. Sometimes it may sound cool to be categorized, however, it might even hurt the others’ feelings.

Due to the stereotype of the society, Geek is not someone to be praised even it is not the spotlight of the crowd. Geek actually is not a favorable word. Greek can be referred to the dictionary as someone who is intelligent in particular interested subjects but not fashionable or popular. Typically, Geek’s personality is described as they are poorly socialized, disconnected from the others that they feel comfort within their own zone, and they seek for something that more than his real own life in an unrealistic way. For example, Sci Fi Geek loves to immense in his defined ideal Sci-Fi world, imagine himself/herself live virtual world, and strongly believe in the future that his/her memory and conscious can be stored in a chip and able from an old dead body to a self -designed synthetic’s body.

Geeks are insane and mad.

This seems like a harsh description about the Geeks. However, the geeks were unique in the way that they actually put in effort turning unrealistic imagination into the realistic stuffs. The Geek is someone potentially that make a change in the society. They are so interested in the subjects until they even want to apply the subjects’ knowledge in the reality. The Geeks’ imagination and creativity are limitless and they are not restricted by the judgmental of the ordinary people’s views. They are willing to risk to cross the reality’s boundary to find the ideal land. To be accurate, they are not mad, they are insanely intelligent. Who will know that the most popular brand for button-like cell phones in 2000s, will be defeated by a brand-new touch screen cell phones-The Apple by a Geek inventor called Steve Jobs?

Name: Tan Yen Rou
Student ID: 0333671

There are always rumors flying around the Chinese society saying that if you are studying in National Secondary School (Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan), you will be a ‘lala’.
The word ‘lala’ has always been the common mandarin term used by the Chinese society. The ‘lala’ trend has never ended till these days. So, what does the word ‘lala’ really means? The word ‘lala’ brings visions of street gangs. We can say that every Chinese know the meaning of ‘lala’, but they may mean different things to different people.

Thinking it over, I decided that ‘lala’ is basically a person who tried to make themselves look like a hooligan, not only by appearance but also their attitude. They are not necessary a bad person, some can look like a ‘lala’ where some can act like a ‘lala’. We can also define them as gangster wannabe. Those ‘lala’ are always trying to show that they are rebellious and think they look cool with rubbish attitudes.

I visited Sungai Wang once, there were boys wearing earing, dyed ginger hair and popped collar. Somehow, they dress like an uneducated punk and made the place looks like a ‘lala’ land.

A ‘lala’, then, is a person who tries to make himself looks cool and rebellious, but they are not cool at all. They have no grace, they have bad attitudes, they are all just immature ‘kids’ who are trying to look cool and gain popularity by their attitude.

A Drama Queen

Name: Eow Siew Fen
ID:0333751
Drama queen. A word used to describe a person who always seek for attention no matter where they are or what they are doing. However, there’s a misinterpretation in our society where some think that one who react to something dramatically is automatically a drama queen. It’s true when a person who do something dramatically can be a drama queen who is seeking for attention but it’s wrong to have a mindset that whoever who react dramatically is a drama queen because over the years, people have been mistook a person who have mental illness like borderline personality disorder as a drama queen.

What is exactly a drama queen? A drama queen is a person who is extremely insecure and miserable. They often give excessively emotional performances or reaction and would act as tough things are much worse than they are.

I believe majority would have seen one in their entire life already. I met one when I was in 8th grade. The girl who opened my eyes to the world I’m living now. Meeting her made me realized how miserable a life can be when you have a drama queen as your friend.

When we were fooling around with other classmates during recess, she would come over and have a big reaction with some guy’s joke, even if the joke was meant to be cold. There was once when we play hide and seek, and when it was her turn who look for us, she would purposely look for good-looking guy and then forgot about the others. She would intentionally shout using her “baby” voice and banging the doors to look for them.

Everything she did was so extra for me. All of us would sometimes act dramatically to some extent, but most of us, unlike the drama queens, know the limit and perfectly aware with the consequences brought by our own actions. A drama queen would never know this.

Alex is reading comics under the textbook!"
"Teacher! There's someone......"

Many students may feel familiar with the sound "Teacher! There's someone......", some can’t help frowning and even subconsciously feel irritated when hearing that sentence. The owner of the irritating voice normally won the favor of their teachers. In contrary, their peers are often disgusted by their actions and even named them as 'teacher's pet', which is obviously not a graceful name to be called. Somehow, we cannot deny that the nickname is actually quite apt to those students. It is even possible for the ‘teacher’s pet’ to feel complacent as they understand it as the evidence of being the teacher’s favorite.

The name ‘teacher’s pet’ seems like it already put its meaning on the table, which means those annoying students who kisses up to the teacher and does a bunch of favors for the teacher. The kind of student who raises his hand for every single question and even buys expensive gifts for their teacher. Some of these kind of students thinks that they are superior to their peers because they are teacher’s favorite and therefore they bosses everyone around. They will also tattle on their peers for insignificant rules they might break. There is a well saying that says: ‘When someone begins to show kindness without reason or cause, he must be conducting something evil or obscene.’ Not to say those students who act as their ‘teacher’s pet’ so fervently and with a lofty tone. Even a pet dog would wish for dog biscuits from their owner when it finishes its owner’s request, not to mention human being. These students mostly don’t act so because he or she wants to be a good student, conversely, they are trying to gain extra advantages such as good grades from their teachers for doing so.

From movies or drama, kiasu this term would often appear to scold someone which is very calculative when it comes to grades or even results. It is actually a hokkien direct translate term. In hokkien it means afraid to lose, can`t afford to lose.

Well it is said that Singaporeans are very competitive and very kiasu as they would want to be the best in everything. this term would often used to scold or describe a nerd that always gets good grades or would always beg for that one marks.

"Eh, teacher, can give me one mark? I got 78 marks, but Zoey got 78 also, I must be the highest in class, can give me that extra mark?" The term kiasu is not a type compliment but its actually a type of humiliation. This term itself indicates the negativity side as students nowadays are becoming more and more kiasu, more and more competing with each other`s results, each other`s grades and marks. Even though healthy competition could improve each others marks and performances, but this kiasu culture had been buried deep inside the heart of the teenagers nowadays and I believe that this kiasu culture should be banished and replaced by a healthy competition.

Tay Sui Xiong
0333756
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Said Michael Jordan, a six-time NBA final MVP award winner. Indeed, we work hard to achieve what we want in the long run but humans tend to want themselves to be better than others and in which they call it ‘self-betterment’ so that they are placed in a position where they are more superior than others. These people often hate to share information or to lend a helping hand just so they could prevent others from catching up. These egoistic people with high individualistic charisma in Malaysia are addressed as ‘kiasu’.

Well in my sole opinion, it is a norm in society for humans to possess a selfish character or in other words, ‘kiasu’. For example, the urge to win in every conversation you are having or even to buy loads of items during a big promotion are all describing ‘kiasu’ in general.

The term ‘kiasu’ is originally translated directly from Hokkien dialect. ‘Kia’ is known as feared or worried and ‘su’ is known as defeated in Hokkien. Joining them together simply means ‘fear of being defeated’. It is in human nature for us strive for the best for ourselves and hoping we stand out in the whole community of people or benefit ourselves and to achieve that, some of the people will act selfishly towards others.

Secondly, ‘kiasu’ can also be described as a person who is greedy. In a hustle and bustling society, I’m sure we all can relate to that one person who doesn’t give seats to prioritized citizen while using the public transport. This people often prioritize themselves for their wellbeing without thinking about others.

Thirdly, ‘kiasu ’individuals crave for attention more than anybody else. For example, some of the company’s state that they are donating a large sum of money to the needy and they want it to be published on social media to spread awareness, but in the end, their main purpose is just to promote their companies name virally. This ‘kiasu’ individuals will end up donating just that once because in the end, its always about keeping up with the Joneses without an untainted heart.

‘Kiasu’ isn’t always bad as it seems. ‘Kiasu’ can also act as a motivation towards for us to achieve our goals. For example, as a student, I tend to spend my free time studying, reading and doing exercises just to make sure I could achieve excellence in my studies. Setting goals is life is a very important aspect in our life because it allows us to keep pushing to our limits which makes us discover the undiscoverable.

Well I do think that every good thing has its drawbacks and vice versa, and it same goes to a ‘kiasu’ person. As the famous multimillionaire apple founder, Steve Jobs once said “stay hungry, stay foolish”.

As the dictionary defines it “a nerd” is an unstylish socially inept person who actually enjoys studying. A person who never has fun because they tend to follow every rule to the letter thus being standoffish to the people around them. They can easily be spotted because stereotypes suggest that they wear thick glasses and unfashionable clothes. The world around us is chiseled to shape by nerds. Most nerds grow up to do great things that may not sound so sane to a normal person until they bring it to reality. They tend to help others in every step of life even when they are made fun of for being different. They are taken advantage off for being smarter than the rest and are cheated off during tests and exams. It makes it difficult for them to fit in at times which creates a negative impact on their childhood. They never get to be part of the popular gang unless of course they are needed for assignments and projects. However, the lucky ones may not go through the same faith, instead they find friends who are as weird as they are. Nerds are disliked and made fun off because people realize they are smarter than them and one day those nerds might end up being their bosses, and who likes their bosses?

STUDENT ID ;0333678
KHADIJA ISMAIL

Name: Shamiella Baziella Bt.Mohamad
Student ID: 0333104

You're such a drama queen! It’s not a big deal”

First of all, drama queen implies it’s a girlie thing. It’s not. Males and females alike are equally capable of requiring way more energy than a relationship with them is worth. Drama, being a close kin to high maintenance, may manifest itself in behaviors that look different across the continuum of masculinity to femininity, but make no mistake, drama kings are every bit as real as drama queens. A drama queen could also be described as a diva, a neurotic and self-centered perfectionist prone to sudden demands and outbursts. A diva is also usually considered to be exceptionally talented, however, which is not always the case with a drama queen. She may be jealous or envious of others, which could make any personal failings even more painful and trigger another round of emotional outbursts or irrational thoughts of revenge. In her world, people can be either with her or against her; there are no stages in between.

If you call someone a drama queen, you mean they react to situation in an unnecessarily overdramatic or exaggerated way. Drama queen thrive on attention, but that’s because they learned to feel invisible and unimportant. This is where the idea of drama comes from. They are merely trying to convince themselves, and also by trying to convince others, that’s matter the most. Drama queen are bind to the feelings of others and failed to develop the coping skills for and adult life

The world is filled with interesting characters. Everywhere we go there are people who have the potential to catch you off-guard with their bizarre behaviour. A prime example of a particular behaviour, which can be brought into the spotlight is a drama queen.
What is a drama queen? Who's a drama queen? Would be some of the question someone may ask. However, others are easily aware of what it is as they are either a drama queen or have met a drama queen.
A drama queen can be defined in many ways. He or she is naturally thought as a person who loves attention whenever and or wherever they are. Especially in a social setting. I can also be described as someone who takes everything very seriously, making it a bigger deal than it is.

Although it's undeniably annoying to the people around them, there are different reasons why they are this way. They can be insecure about themselves that they require constant attention and importance from everyone. Looking at the bigger picture, it seems to be more of a psychological problem that can be fixed.

Lishha
0334099

I’m no stranger to the word kiasu. Although I have never been called kiasu myself, my class in secondary school was famous for it because we were a very competitive class. My class was the top class in the school which was considered the best class in the whole school. We all did quite well in all of our exams. To our teaches, we were the best batch of students in school that time. Kiasu, in the mandarin language means afraid to lose,”kia” which means scared and “su” which means lose. This word, for a long time has been given a bad “image” by many people. If a person is kiasu, he is seen as a person who is selfish, a person who would do whatever is needed to avoid failure. To many, it is an insult to be called kiasu, which I disagree. In my opinion, I think the only reason people call other people kiasu is because they are jealous of them because I was faced with similar situation. I used to call my friends kiasu because they worked harder than me, they studied harder than I could ever studied. So by calling people kiasu, I assured myself that I’m not kiasu myself but in reality I was disappointed with myself.Name: Barnabas Masil Id: 0333800

Thugilann Raman

A geek is a person who had nerdish tendencies, but its complimented with nerdish tendencies and a love of love for things society deems weird/ strange/ etc. There are many types of geeks, you have your sci fi geeks, your history geeks, your comic geeks, etc. The one unifying factor of these sorts of people is that they usually are the minority and for that they dont rank high on whatever means one uses to gauge social status, be it a pyramid, a table, a rsting of 0 - 10, etc.
I consider myself, and most of my friends geeks. However we werent ostracized for it by our peers, we were celebrated for it. There were people who hated us with a passion, as we seemed to be a bunch of "know it alls" who didnt hesitate to engage in a debate on various issues, be it wether the British and the French were to blame for the troubles in the middle east ( with regards to the Sykes - Picot agreement ) or if the latest episode of an anime series was worth the wait.
Yes, we were seen as weird. Ive had to explain my views to people consistently as they do differ from what both liberals and conservatives consider the party line. But in the end, its worth the endless personal attacks. The endless cries of "this is why youre single and hated," or "go and die in a fire" amuse me, as someone who accepts his identity as a geek never falters in what he believes in.
I do realise my definition of a geek has diverged from the regular understanding of it, but Im a geek, fight me on it!
