Wednesday 24th January 2008 - Fiche de révision

Surveillance

Intro

Our world is more and more connected but the consequence of this is that citizens are more and more under surveillance.

I. The facts

We are under constant suveillance: on the street there are CCTV cameras and drones to follow us. At home, smartphones, webcams and social networks follow us everywhere. Do we have privacy?

2. The consequences

It's difficult to maintain privacy in a world that is so connected. In the trailer to The Circle, at the beginning, the main character doesn't know/realize she's being spied on, at the same time she's spying on people. The film shows the dark side of new technologies. She works for a company which looks like Google . This film is a warning against the surveillance society.

3. The reactions/The solutions

Is the solution stopping all social networks ? Is it too late ? Today we work and we relax with technology. This generation are tech natives and living without technology is not possible. All we can we do is use it in moderation.

Ccl

Technology is not always good but it's not going to go away. We need to learn how to use it and learn about its dangers.

Consumption

Intro

Citizens all over the world consume more and more. Why and what are the consequences?

1. The facts

Black Friday is an example of the excesses of the consumer society. People spend the day in shops spending too much money. They become crazy, aggressive and it's like an addiction. They buy things they don't need. People want to be first in stores. It's not only in the USA but all over the world. What are the reasons?

2. The reasons/The causes

Consumers are manipulated by advertising. They don't have the time to compare prices because there are many people in stores. People are brainwashed. They think that if they buy a certain product, they will be happy.

On the other hand, greenwashing makes people think they are buying an ecological product when it is not. In class we created campaigns to promote « green » detergent.

Rebranding is another technique to sell last-year's products.

3. The solutions

Consumers need to consume in moderation and they need to be informed. Adbusters was created BND in 1992 to make people react/think/to make people aware of the problem. It's a good idea.

Ccl

Consumption looks like a good thing but in reality it is a scam because consumers are manipulated.

Work

Intro

The world of work is changing. More and more employees do not have guarantees. What are those changes?

1. Gig jobs

Gig jobs are small jobs. Gig workers work only when the company needs them. They don't have fixed schedules/timetables. The employees and the clients use applications/smartphones to communicate. Some famous companies are Uber, Deliveroo or TaskRabbit.

2. Zero-hour(s) contracts

Employees have contracts but they don't have a fixed schedule and a fixed wage so they don't have guarantees and benefits. The employees are mostly young. There are more and more zero-hours contracts in the UK. There were almost 1 million ZHC's in 2017.

3. New jobs versus traditional jobs

ZHC's can be a stepping-stone to finding a permanent job. These jobs give you experience and a real job requires experience. But a real job gives you gaurantees and security that a ZHC doesn't. When you are a student these new jobs are good because they give you flexibility and you can earn a little bit of extra money. Students need money to pay for their education.

Ccl

Like them or not, gig jobs and ZHC's have benefits and drawbacks . But they are the future of work.
