Purgatory is not a half-way point between heaven and hell, as those who are in purgatory are on their way to heaven. Purgatory is often thought of as a state of pain, but it is also a state of hope. The sense of pain comes from the removal of the effects of sins. Hope comes from the fact that the person knows that heaven awaits them once this purifying is finished.
