Christians believe that when people are judged before the total love of God, many want to accept the offer of God's presence for all eternity. However, the overwhelming love of God will make the person ashamed of how they have not responded well to the love of God throughout their life. They will be very conscious of the sins they have committed.

Catholics know that God is forgiving. However, even in an everyday relationship, people feel uncomfortable in the presence of someone they have wronged until they do something to make up for the offence. It is not the other person who demands this; the individual simply wants to make things better. The same applies to a relationship with God. The person cannot feel at ease in the presence of God while they are still conscious of their own sins, even though these have been forgiven.

Purgatory is a cleansing process, rather than a place, in which the effects of sins are removed so that the person can feel happy in the full presence of God. Purgatory is not a half-way point between heaven and hell, as those who are in purgatory are on their way to heaven. Purgatory is often thought of as a state of pain, but it is also a state of hope. The sense of pain comes from the removal of the effects of sins. Hope comes from the fact that the person knows that heaven awaits them once this purifying is finished. Those in purgatory need the support and the prayers of other people so that the cleansing process might be completed quickly.
