Through chapter 11 we see Elwood have courage to ask Denise out, determination to get his G.E.D again while making a living for himself and buying his own apartment. Through the end of chapter 12 we see the start of his determination to get out of Nickel for his grandma.

Even as an adult his time at Nickel uncounciously stays with him even when his life is so much better and he is considered to have a "much better life" than he did before. Its truely signficant to the idea of leaving Nickel, because even if you aren't physically there it never really leaves.

(Whitehead 153) This phrase is important, it emphasize no matter how hard you try, your either lucky or you go in a cycle. This refers to Clayton Smith when he got back in the Nickel van when almost escaping. This phrase create an emption of hopelessness.

One sentence I believe is significant from Chapters 11-12 is "Get rid of Nickel" (Whitehead 158). This sentence at the end of chapter 12 creates much foreshadowing. As this may be the start of how Elwood starts a better life from Chapter 11, but still honoring his accomplishments from naming his moving company Ace. Doing whatever he can to escape the terrifying penitentiary.

Is significant because it brings back to Elwood of what he originally believed in. He decides at the end of chapter 12 that he will no longer get out of Nickel the other ways and decides to "get rid of Nickel," or disembody the school in order to free himself instead of staying obiedient and quiet.

The word, "justice" is important to chapters 11-12. This is because in both chapters we can see Elwood's sense of justice and how it changes. Throughout chapter 11, Elwood has a "stick it to the man"-type mindset. This chapter takes place during his adulthood so we can see how Nickel changed him. He believes that the system is corrupt. In chapter 12, Elwood's sense of justice has been withered down. He doesn't stick up for what's right, opting to keep his head down. At the end of the chapter however, he says how he believes the other way to get out of Nickel is to destroy it. Therefore, it may take roots in his past sense of justice.

-Isabelle Duquesnay

Harriet is explaining to Elwood how the lawyer took their money and left. Their situation is described as "a classic miscarriage of justice" (Whitehead 157). This phrase is significant to the chapters because it relates to older Elwood's mindset. As well as the situation that Elwood is in chapter 12. Chapter 11 Elwood doesn't believe in people anymore. He believes that the lawmakers and people in positions of authority aren't good people. This mindset can be carried back to the situation that happens in chapter 11. Elwood doesn't receive justice/help from a lawyer.

-Isabelle D
