Too little
Not getting enough sleep can lead to a lack of alertness, less retention of information, and mood swings. It also increases the likelihood of a car accident. If this is a continuing trend, it can have long term effects as well.
Too much
Well there aren't really short term effects of getting too much sleep, it increases the chance of diabetes, as well as getting a heart attack. Also, studies have shown that adults who consistently get over 9 hours of sleep tend to die younger than those who don't.

While scientists have been studying sleep habits and why we need it for a very long time, they still haven't decided why we need such a long amount. But they have figured out the main function is to process information for the day. We also need sleep to grow and repair muscle. Both of these things happen throughout the day, but work the best when we are sleeping.

As we get older, we need less and less sleep. Babies need from 14-15 hours, teenagers need from 8-9, and adults need 7-8. Adults also have different patterns of sleep than kids do.
Teenagers have something built in their hormones that makes them stay up later than adults, despite needing to get more sleep.
While the elderly need as much sleep as middle age adults, they get less sleep because of nocturnal awakenings
