Basic Research; Experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge, improve and expand the knowledge

Applied research; Original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge, focused on a real problem and finding solutions towards that problem.

Key features of scientific research:
Systematic exploration (scientific steps: formulation of hypotheses, compilation of facts, analysis of facts)
Objectivity (the ability to see and accept facts as they are, not as one might wish they were.)
Verifiable (able to be checked or demonstrated to be true, accurate, or justified.)
Research questions
Data analysis (Data analysis is a process of inspecting, cleansing, transforming, and modelling data with the goal of discovering useful information, informing conclusions, and supporting decision-making)

What is the difference between basic and applied research? Provide 2 examples for each.

Basic research is exploring fundamental knowledge and theoretical in nature (e.g. finding new species & discovering components making up human DNA)

Applied research is practical in nature, it aimed to solve specific practical problems or questions (e.g. study on how to improve illiteracy in teenagers & study looking for ways to market products for millennials.)

key features of scientific research：
(1) Exploratory. Scientific research is the process of continually exploring, of turning the unknown into the known, of turning what is less known into more known.

(2) Creativity. Scientific research is the creation of something that was not there, and without creativity it cannot be scientific research.

(3) Inheritance. The creation of scientific research is based on the achievements of previous generations and is achieved through inheritance.

(4) Continuity. Scientific research is a long-term activity that must be carried out continuously; this characteristic determines that in the organisation and management of scientific research, researchers must be given the necessary conditions. Only then can a high level of efficiency be achieved and results obtained.

applied research：

Key Differences Between Basic and Applied Research：
1.Basic Research can be explained as research that tries to expand the already existing scientific knowledge base. On the contrary, applied research is used to mean the scientific study that is helpful in solving real-life problems.
2.While basic research is purely theoretical, applied research has a practical approach.
3.The applicability of basic research is greater than the applied research, in the sense that the former is universally applicable whereas the latter can be applied only to the specific problem, for which it was carried out.
4.The primary concern of the basic research is to develop scientific knowledge and predictions. On the other hand, applied research stresses on the development of technology and technique with the help of basic science.
5.The fundamental goal of the basic research is to add some knowledge to the already existing one. Scientific knowledge is objective. Objectivity simple means the ability to see and accept facts as they are, not as one might wish them to be. To be objective, one has to guard against his own biases, beliefs, wishes, values and preferences. Objectivity demands that one must set aside all sorts of the subjective considerations and prejudices.

2. Verifiability:

Science rests upon sense data, i.e., data gathered through our senses—eye, ear, nose, tongue and touch. Scientific knowledge is based on verifiable evidence (concrete factual observations) so that other observers can observe, weigh or measure the same phenomena and check out observation for accuracy
Difference:
Applied research is a research methodology that creates practical solutions for specific problems while basic research is an approach to research that seeks to expand knowledge in a field of study. This means that applied research is solution-driven while basic research is knowledge-specific. 

Basic research seeks to advance the frontiers of knowledge by creating new theories or modifying existing ones. On the other hand, applied research is primarily concerned with creating solutions to problems by collecting and analyzing empirical data in order to arrive at valid research outcomes
