Over millions of years, most species can adapt to changing environments. When environments change in just a few hundred years, many species cannot adapt quickly enough to survive. Polar bears are a good example of this. Global warming has caused large amounts of polar ice to melt rapidly. Polar bears have been unable to adapt to their smaller environments. They need the polar ice to sleep and hunt large prey. The declining numbers of large ice floes have caused some polar bear populations to drop by more than 20 percent in less than twenty years.

Climate scientists also advise against the continued logging and clearing of the rain forest. They argue that continued deforestation will release an additional two hundred billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in the coming decades. While conservation of forests and rain forests will cost money, scientists believe that it is essential to any plan to combat global warming.

As global warming progresses, many animals will likely be unable to adapt to changing environmental conditions and become extinct. The sudden extinction of several animal species will severely alter the environment. It will damage food chains and other delicate parts of the ecosystem.

One of their main suggestions is that people switch from using fossil fuels to using alternative energy sources. Hydroelectric power, wind energy, and solar energy could be used to power homes and vehicles instead of oil, gas, and coal.
