A Guide to the Application Process

For 16-19 year old students

Varndean College, BHASVIC and Brighton MET together form the Accord Colleges in Brighton and Hove. The three colleges have a coordinated application process for students seeking to study at any of the Accord Colleges.

Under the Accord, you will not be able to make an application to both Varndean College and BHASVIC. This is so that these two sixth form colleges can effectively plan curriculum provision to cater for as many students wishing to study in one of these colleges as possible.

You are welcome to make an application to one of these two Sixth Form Colleges and also to Brighton MET, however. You are also entirely free to apply to any other educational institution - it is only in the case of Varndean College and BHASVIC that you are not able to apply to both colleges. An Accord College is likely to ask you, at interview, about any other applications you have made or offers you hold from other educational institution, employer or training provider.

As part of the application process for either Sixth Form College, you will be asked to confirm that you have not made a separate application to the other Sixth Form College.

Varndean and BHASVIC work very closely together and will share data to check and avoid applicants having applied to both Sixth Form Colleges. If you have made an application to both Sixth Form Colleges, you may no longer be treated as a priority applicant. One of the colleges will contact you to ask which application you wish to withdraw and an interview will not be possible at either college until this has been established.

To enquire about a late place to join the College in September 2023 or any other queries regarding the admissions process, please email information@varndean.ac.uk.

St Oscar Romero - Sixth Form

Welcome to the Sixth Form at St Oscar Romero Catholic School.

The new Sixth Form at St Oscar Romero will open in September 2024.

Firstly, thank you for considering us for the next stage of your education. Reflecting on my own experience of completing my A levels, and as a parent, I fully appreciate the importance of this next stage in a young person’s education.

At St Oscar Romero, our aim is simple: we want to be the best Sixth Form in England. This means that we can, ‘hand on heart’, say that our students will get a better deal than if they attended another college.

Central to this is ensuring that you will receive the very best support in order to fulfil your true potential. Alongside academic excellence, we pride ourselves on providing outstanding pastoral care so that every young person is ‘known and loved’.

Your choice of where to study for the next two years is probably the most important decision you have had to make in your life so far. Studying for your A-Levels will define your future: at St Oscar Romero’s we are passionate about providing you with the best education possible, guiding you to becoming successful and independent learners. I can assure you we will work tirelessly to ensure you are fully prepared for the next stage of your lives, be that at university or in the workplace.

We offer an ambitious curriculum where students not only have the opportunity to study a range of courses but also have the opportunity through our enrichment programme to develop a holistic character education which will prepare them for the rigour and challenges of life as they leave St Romero’s.
Our Sixth Formers will be very much part of the school, mentoring and supporting younger students, whilst enjoying increasing independence. The step up to Sixth Form is significant and very exciting.

It is important to us that when you leave us in Year 13, you not only leave with the very best exam results, but also with the moral, spiritual and social skills you need to take your place in an ever-changing world.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming our first cohort in September 2024 and know that they will be the trailblazers and record breakers for West Sussex.

I hope this website gives you a taste of what St Oscar Romero Sixth Form life is all about but the best way to fully appreciate all that we can offer is to come for a visit and see us in action.

Mr Byrne

It also allows you, as one of the most senior members of the school, to take on responsibilities as a role model and leader for our younger students. The focus is squarely on academic success but we will also encourage you to develop your life skills; aspirations and employability. You will leave the Sixth Form as an independent learner and thinker and a responsible young adult.
