DESCRIPTION OF THE TERRITORY

The area extends through the band of hills of the Province of Treviso in the Veneto Region in northern Italy and encompasses the area between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The zone includes a series of hill chains - running from east to west - which follow one after the other from the lowlands to the Pre-Alps, lying equidistant between the sheltering Dolomites to the north and the Adriatic, which has a positive effect on the climate and countryside. While Conegliano plays host to famous wine institutes, Valdobbiadene is surely the productive heart of the area for wine. The steep slopes of the hills make it difficult to mechanize the work and consequently managing the vineyards has almost always been left in the hands of small growers.

The Prosecco vine has been cultivated on these hills for over two hundred years

The position between the Prealps and the sea guarantees a mild climate with a constant ventilation that allow the grapes to dry quickly after the typical summer storms that are frequent in this area.

WILDLIFE The area of Valdobbiadene is very various : the humid lowland forests of the plain to the sunny dry meadows, passing through streams, woods, ponds and slopes. It is these marked geographical differences that are the strength of a landscape in which nature and humans live in close proximity. This is the ideal habitat for the animals to live.Birds are the undisputed rulers here: With the Valdobbiadene's hills they can find the ideal habitat for wintering and also breeding. Another important groups are the mammals and the king of this group is the fox, the second group are composed by amphibians very important indicator of the ground.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta has a neoclassical style and it dates back to the last decade of the 1700s.
Originally it was composed of three naves, but the bombing of the Great War destroyed it and the Cathedral was rebuilt and reinforced in the supporting structures.
Inside the Cathedral there are precious works of art. An example is the altarpiece of the Assumption of Beccaruzzi, the altarpiece of the Virgin and the Saints Sebastian and Rocco of Paris Bordon.
In the Piazza dominates the bell tower, which was built in the mid-eighteenth century.
It suffered great damage after the Great War and was rebuilt in the following years.
Today the bell tower is the symbol of Valdobbiadene.

Famous as the capital, with Conegliano, of the sparkling "prosecco" wine, the town is situated on a plateau at the foot of the Barbaria and Cesen mountains, with the hills to the east and south covered with vineyards. A road from Valdobbiadene, called Strada del Prosecco, reaches Conegliano passing through the areas and canteens of prosecco production.Archeological findings located in this area the Roman road called Augusta-Altinate, connecting Opitergium to the Trentino region.the most important family in aldobbiadene, between XI century and XIII century was Family of Ezzelini. At first around valdobbiadene there were some small towns like San Vito, Caravaggio, Santo Stefano, Barbozza.
The Prosecco Superiore Circular Route is a nature trail of approximately 15 km in length that winds its way past vineyards, cottages, wineries, woods and villages in the Valdobbiadene area. It is a great way to get to know the local wine, food, culture and traditions. The route leads tourists on a journey of discovery through the renowned villages of San Pietro di Barbozza, Saccol and Santo Stefano in the famous land of Cartizze. All along the walking route, you can admire the creations from the “Vignarte” initiative, which sees the humble chestnut wood posts at the ends of rows of vines being carved into remarkable sculptures that commune with their surroundings. The imaginations and hands of the artists were guided by five themed sections along the exhibition route. Over the course of the last five events, the sculptors have been asked to give their interpretations of the following topics: “El Matharol” (a type of mischievous sprite who plays tricks on people), “I Schei” (a term in the Veneto dialect that generally refers to money), “The Future”, “The End of the World” and “The Four Elements”. In addition, wrought iron posts can be found all along the route. Each one provides a translation and description of a word from the local rural lexicon, which is gradually being forgotten. The posts are part of a project named “Saving words": the language of the land”, which aims to reclaim and revive farming terms of the past that have strong ties to the rustic culture of the surrounding area. Meanwhile, in the village of San Pietro di Barbozza there are eye-catching displays of rocks and pebbles from the Piave River that are carved and arranged in extraordinary compositions. They are produced by Angelo Favero, who is better known in art circles as “Zoe”, hence their name: Zoe’s Rocks. With his chisel and his other trusty tools, Zoe creates floral arrays on walls and extravagant characters in various forms that he calls putinòts and describes as “citizens of the world”. The best places to look out for the bizarre creatures are in the area around the village square, near the fountain, on the front of his house and on Via Cima near his workshop: a shack made of concrete and sheets of metal that he calls Alcazar. The Valdobbiadene Consortium organizes guided tours for groups of 15 or more people. They are a great opportunity not only to explore the rich history, landscape and culture of the surrounding area but also to visit local wineries and taste Valdobbiadene DOCG wines and traditional food. The guides are always happy to help with all of your needs. They will ensure that you really get to know the area and have the chance to admire every single one of the stunning views.ROUTEThe route starts in the main square in San Pietro di Barbozza near Valdobbiadene and covers 15 km of unsurfaced paths and paved roads. It is possible to follow all or just part of it. There are also intersecting trails and diversions leading to isolated cottages and little hamlets. The duration of the tour – including both the walking time and the tasting sessions – depends on the needs of each group. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.PRICEThe price depends on the duration of the tour, the number of wineries visited and the types of tasting sessions. Prices start at €12.00 per person. Participation is free for children under 10 years of age and one free place is available for every 15 participants. In the event of bad weather, the tour will take place anyway and participants can travel in their own vehicles.N.B. Tours must be booked at least 15 days in advance.

DescriptionThe numerous dirt roads, paths and mule tracks criss-crossing the Monte Cesen area are perfect for interesting walks and hikes of various levels of difficulty and elevation gain. Many of the paths link the provinces of Belluno and Treviso. A prominent part is played by the TV1 path, which goes past the Malga Mariech agritourism establishment and joins together two important mountain areas: Grappa and Cansiglio. The Monte Cesen area is a Regional Nature Reserve. The distinctive environmental features provide an opportunity to contemplate both the natural and the ethnographic characteristics of the mountain landscape. Hikers can stay in the emblematic local shepherd’s huts, where they can sample a range of traditional mountain products.

A treasure trove of spirituality and a world of graceful beautyThis spellbinding tour leads visitors through sacred and spiritual sites and introduces them to interesting figures such as Saint Venantius Fortunatus, who was born in 540 AD in the ancient town of Duplavilis, which is now known as Valdobbiadene. The route takes in locations where time stands still amidst the land, the water and the sky. Small and large artistic treasures are dotted throughout the breathtaking landscape. The tour starts on Piazza Marconi with a visit to the unmissable cathedral. Inside are exquisite works of art by such illustrious names as Francesco Beccaruzzi, Paris Bordon and Palma il Giovane. Standing tall outside is the bell tower designed by Francesco Maria Preti, which is adorned with a beautiful sundial by Giovanni Follador. The route continues along Via Piva to Villa dei Cedri, which is surrounded by vast grounds. Proceeding along Strada La Cordana, after a quick stop at the washhouse and the capital dedicated to Saint Venantius Fortunatus, the tour takes you to the church of San Floriano. Surrounded by thriving vineyards, it has magnificent views of the valley below. The trail then leads down to the ancient village of Ron, with its welcoming courtyards and old fountain. The next stop is the church of San Gregorio Magno: an old Capuchin monastery that never fails to astound visitors with its dignified charms. The route then leads you back to Piazza Marconi, where the tour ends.Technical rute information Walking time: approximately 3 hoursLength: approximately 6 kmDifficulty: easyStart and finish: Piazza Marconi, gallery outside the Town HallA TOUR OF THE SUNDIALS IN VALDOBBIADENE Along the route you can take a look at some of the many sundials adorning the walls of homes and churches, such as those on Strada La Cordana and Via San Floriano. With more than 30 officially recorded sundials, Valdobbiadene played host to the 21st Italian National Gnomonics Seminar in March 2017. The ancient instruments for measuring time and life have strong roots in the local farming traditions. As well as the hours of the day, they show the seasons of the year that correspond to the different stages of the work in the fields. The sundials are marvellous examples of artistic, mathematical and astronomical prowess and they are often embellished with symbolic images and wise words. The most famous sundial in Valdobbiadene is unquestionably the one created by the Abbot Giovanni Follador on the southern façade of the cathedral bell tower in 1862. The original was destroyed by shelling during the First World War, so the sundial that can be seen today is actually a reconstruction. The motto “Time and life never stop” is written on the large dial, which is framed by two bands on the sides featuring decorative portrayals of the astrological signs.

DescriptionThe Prosecco and Conegliano Valdobbiadene Hills Wine Route was created in 2003 and it covers a total of 90 km. It is the latest incarnation of the first ever Italian wine route, which was introduced back in 1966. The trail showcases the best of the entire surrounding area, including the varied landscapes and the numerous historical, artistic and other attractions that are spread across the hills between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. Long stretches of the original route remain and they have been joined by three spellbinding new themed trails: The Collalto Estate, History and Culture between Serravalle and Follina and the Torchiato di Fregona. The routes lead tourists on a journey of discovery through enchanting settings, with historical and artistic attractions along the way. There are numerous wineries that offer visitors the chance to sample the food and wine of the local area.Cerletti Oenology School in the town of Conegliano makes the ideal starting point for the route. It was founded in 1876 and was the first establishment of its kind in Italy. From there, head towards the small rural settlement of Collalbrigo, where views open up over a “patchwork” of vineyards on the green hills. Subsequently, go through Rua to San Pietro di Feletto, which has an ancient parish church and is a great place to stop and admire the marvellous views. The next stretch of road winds its way to Refrontolo, which is famous for the Croda Watermill. Part of the building is carved out of the rocks and it is unquestionably one of the most stunning stops on the route. As you continue towards Solighetto, you will come across Villa Brandolini, which was built by the family of the same name in the 18th century. The next stops are Farra di Soligo (where you can see the fortifications known as the Towers of Credazzo, which were originally built by the Lombards) and Col San Martino (where you can enjoy the panoramic views from the Romanesque oratory of San Vigilio and the oratory of San Martino). On the way to Colbertaldo, the natural landscape is still largely intact. Urban areas gradually make way for the little farmsteads that are dotted across the vineyard-filled hills. The journey continues in a northerly direction, with vineyards on all sides. The next stop is the pre-eminent cru of the DOCG Prosecco Superiore area: Cartizze, which is where the prized sparkling wine of the same name is made. From Follo the route leads up to Santo Stefano and then to San Pietro di Barbozza (the longstanding home of the “Confraternita di Valdobbiadene”), before reaching Valdobbiadene, where the outward journey ends. From Piazza Marconi, the next part of the route takes you to Guia. From there, you will travel towards Campea through a rural landscape that remains unblemished, before crossing the Soligo River and reaching Pedeguarda. Then you will come to Farrò, Arfanta, Tarzo and Corbanese, where the land slopes steeply down to the plain. In the Cozzuolo, Carpesica and Ogliano areas, you will leave the striking landscapes of the higher ground behind and travel through the gentle, rolling hills back to Conegliano town centre.

The foundations of the primitive construction rest on the bare rock, precisely the "croda" of the mountain. In addition to the mill, the area is interesting from the landscape and naturalistic point. There are several paths that branch off from here in the valley. Note the old lignite mining mines, active in the period from 1866 until 1947. The old mill, symbol of a rural civilization in danger of extinction under the pressure of industrial civilization, milled the last flour in 1953. Recently it is was subjected to scrupulous restoration works that have preserved the characteristics of the building unaltered. On the ground floor, the millstone has been made functional again.

Valdobbiadene and Conegliano are famous for their "prosecco" wine. The town is situated on a plateau at the foot of the Barbaria and Cesen mountains, with hills to the east and south covered with vineyards. A road from Valdobbiadene, called Strada del Prosecco, reaches Conegliano passing through the vineyards and by the prosecco producing canteens . Some archeological findings located in this area are the Roman road called Augusta-Altinate, which connects Opitergium to the Trentino region. The most important family in valdobbiadene, between the XI century and XIII century was the Ezzelini family. At first there were many small towns like San Vito, Caravaggio, Santo Stefano, Barbozza surrounding Valdobbiadene. These towns take their name from the church. These places were like a community where the people talked about all the things happening in their daily lives.

WILDLIFE The territory of Valdobbiadene is varied: from the humid forests of the plain to the sunny dry meadows, passing through streams, woods, ponds and slopes. It is these marked geographical differences that are the strength of a landscape in which nature and humans live in close proximity. This is the ideal habitat for the animals to live. Birds are the undisputed rulers here: they can find the perfect place for wintering and also breeding. The undispued king of the animals is the fox

Our winery is in S.Stefano di Valdobbiadene, at the heart of the area of production of Prosecco di Valdobbiadene e Conegliano, and we make mainly sparkling wine.

It is a family-run business which employs the owner, Valeriano Bortolin, his children and some workers.

We like to date the history of the company back to 1542: in that year Treviso State Archives record that Zan Bortolin, a wine grower living in S.Stefano di Valdobbiadene, was cultivating 17 allotments and produced 20.5 “conzos” of wine (a conzo is about 100 litres).

More recently, between the First and the Second World War, Valeriano Bortolin (namesake of the current owner) took part in fairs and competitions in several Italian cities and, thanks to the quality of his wines, he was awarded medals and certificates which are now treasured at the company seat.

Back then wines were sold locally, in the nearby cities of Treviso, Padua and Venice; part of them were sold in demijohns and part were bottled.

As from 1950, Valeriano’s heirs began to equip their winery in order to obtain sparkling wines through the Charmat method; they bought the first autoclaves and modern bottling machines.

Since then they have been modernizing their wine-making methods and equipment, in a continuous search for quality which aims at innovation but still remains faithful to traditions.

Currently, the company has 20 hectares of vineyards divided into various allotments which go from the area of Cartizze to Valdobbiadene, through the municipalities of Farra di Soligo and Follina and get as far as S.Pietro di Feletto, near Conegliano. Besides owning vineyards, the company also buys grapes from trusted winegrowers from the Valdobbiadene area. On the whole, every year it produces about 300 thousand bottles of sparkling wine, above all Prosecco di Valdobbiadene DOC (in its Dry, Extra Dry and Brut varieties) and Prosecco di Valdobbiadene DOC Superiore di Cartizze, but also an Extra Brut wine, called Vigneto del Convento, made from a grape blend of Prosecco and Chardonnay, and finally a still white wine, called Colli di Conegliano Bianco DOC.

The real history of Valdobbiadene started between the XI and the XII centuries with the family Ezzelini, the medieval protagonists of Valdobbiadene. But the Golden age of the city was under the Serenissima, when the economy and the city greatly developed. For example the spinning mill where they produced silk. Valdobbiadene was under the district of Venice until the Italy's kingdom. In 1848 the inhabitants of Valdobbiadene were ready to attack and protect the region from the Austrian army and then some of the population escaped to the Piedmont region for a better life and for this action the other inhabitants disappointed it because they have left the war and left them alone.Even more when in 1859 the region Veneto region was under foreign dominance. In 1929 the hamlet S. Pietro di Barbozza was united with Valdobbiadene.Another serious fact was in 1945 when 50 prisoners of war were executed by dissident factions and partisan defectors.

The Italian army passed the river on October 24, 1918 and began the decisive Battle of Vittorio Veneto.
In this way they won against the Austro-Hungarians and the Germans.
