1.) Defining Key Words:

There are some key words that you need to know when talking about energy, these words are Energy, Work, and the Law of conservation of energy. These words will be defined below!
Energy:
~ Energy is the ability to do work.
Example: When you eat ice cream, it give you energy, so you can do work!
Work:
~ Work is applying force to move or change something.
Example: When you are kicking a soccer ball, you are doing work, because you are applying a force to move something.
Law of conservation of energy:
~ The Law of conservation of energy states "energy cannot be created or destroyed"
Example: If a ball is sitting on a table, then it is simply not just going to start rolling around, and if a battery is charging a light, then it will not just stop working. Something that can happen to make it seem like energy is being destroyed is there can be waste energy that is released, that is why something will not last forever, and will slowly release all of its energy through waste energy.
An extra word to know is waste energy, and Kinetic and Potential energy
Waste energy:
~ Waste energy is energy that isn't being used for its intended purpose.
Example: If a light bulb releases heat energy, then that is waste energy because that isn't what the lightbulb is intended to make.
Kinetic energy:
~ Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. This means that if something is in motion, then it has kinetic energy. Nothing can move without energy, because energy is the ability to do work, and something moving is doing work!
Example: If a ball is rolling, then it has Kinetic energy.
Potential energy:
~ Potential energy is stored energy, that is waiting to be used. There is potential energy is in everything, because everything has the ability, or potential to move.
Example: If you take that ball, and put it on a table, and it becomes still, then that is potential energy.

2.) Defining the 6 types of energy:

There are 6 MAIN types of energy, but there are many more, but today we are going to focus on the 6 main types which are, Mechanical, Electrical, Sound, Thermal, Light (Radiant), and Chemical.
Mechanical energy:

~ Mechanical energy is energy that an object has due to motion or position. Mechanical energy is used move lift, and hold objects. This type of energy is shown below with the color grey.

Examples: A swing, A bike
Electrical energy:

~ Electrical energy is energy carried by charged particles. Electrical energy is also called Electricity. Charged particles can build up on an object ( static electricity. ) Charged particles can move from one place to another ( current ). This is shown below with the color blue.

Examples: Electrical devices ( phones, chargers, power cords etc.).
Sound energy:

~ Sound energy is energy carried by soundwaves. Sound waves are longitudinal waves that travel through matter ( Solid, Liquid, or Gas. ) Sound energy is created when an object vibrates. this is shown below with sound waves.

Examples: A radio, someone speaking.
Thermal energy:

~ Thermal energy is associated with temperature. The faster the particles vibrate, the hotter they get. This is shown below with the color red.

Examples: The Sun, A Stove.
Light (radiant energy):

~ Light energy is energy carried by light. Light energy refers to visible light. Visible light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye. this is shown below with the color yellow.

Examples : The Sun, Light bulbs.
Chemical energy:

~ Chemical energy is energy stored within the bonds between atoms of matter. It is used to keep atoms bonded together. This is shown below with the color green.

Examples: People eating food, Plants going through photosynthesis.

3.) Questions:

Question 1. Can energy change?
Answer: Yes, energy can change forms. In fact, energy changed forms all the time. When you plug a lamp into an outlet, and turn it on, electrical energy goes into the light and becomes light energy, so you can light up a room! Through these processes, energy can be wasted, because sometimes the transfer of energy doesn't always work. This is why some lightbulbs create heat along with light.
Question 2. Can energy be created or destroyed?
Answer: No, energy cannot be created or destroyed. According to the Law of conservation of energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed. It may be argued that energy can just disappear, but energy is just released all the time. That is why the lightbulb creates heat, because it can release Waste energy.
Question 3. Can an object transfer more than one type of energy? ( think of a campfire)
Answer: Yes, objects can transfer more than one type of energy. when you look at a campfire, you see light, and feel heat, and hear sound. these are all types of energy that the campfire is releasing. This means that sometimes energy is used for an unintended purpose, such as heat coming off of a light bulb.
Question 4. How does energy flow in a system?
Energy flows in a system by transferring the forms of energy. this means that when the water hits the wheel, the Mechanical energy from the water transfers, or flows into wheel. Then, the wheel powers the wire by transferring into Electrical energy. this process happens every time energy has to flow through a system.
