Backgrounds can change the perspective of how we look at the different pictures shown in a graphic novel. It can change the pictures mood and completely transform the meaning the entire scene. 
This can also be done using colours, take for example a grey picture with flowers dying, and a boy in the middle being happy, you won't examine his happiness but the depressing background. However if you throw on some colours and boom, your mood has entirely changed. skrrt
