Author: Adapted from the International Children's Bible
Illustrator: Hans Willhelm
Publication: 1986
Genre: Religious
Interest Level: Early Childhood
Text Level: Early Elementary
Teaser: This book explains to the young children that God is essentially "All-Knowing". It states that He, "knows every hair on their head, numbered the grains of sand, placed the mountains specifically where they need to be, and so on..." Basically, this book plays an important role in guiding the lives of children and reassuring them that their has been a plan for their life since before they were born. They are special, and they have a purpose to fulfill--we all do.
Teaching Idea: Teaches the children 'where the rain comes from'. Essentially they will figure it out, but the hope for this book is that they will never outgrow their view of God as a warm, loving, and actively involved in the lives of His children.

It goes: "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little one's to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong."
Teaching Idea: This reiterates to children that there is a Father who loves them, no matter their situation. It repeats over and over again "Yes, Jesus loves me". This repetition allows them to remind themselves, not someone telling them...but also because the Bible tells them so.
Link: https://youtu.be/owx3ao42kwI

It talks about some of the important biblical individuals who did great things in the Golden City: Solomon, David, Moses, Mattathias, Alexander the Great, etc. This book outlines all of the important events, people, and places that are within this City and how they shaped who we are today.

Teaching Idea: By learning about the events and people that are significant to a specific time and place, children are able to essentially put two and two together. They really begin to appreciate monuments that they see and people that they meet throughout their lives. What better way to teach them, then to start off young.

Author: Hutton, Warwick
Illlustrator: Hutton, Warwick
Publication: Margaret K. McElderry Books 1987
Genre: Religious Nonfiction
Interest Level: Elementary
Text Level: Higher Elementary
Teaser: This book basically tells of the children's version the first 7 days. These days tell of the things He created; including Adam and Eve. It starts of with night and day and then ends with the Garden of Eden. It tells of how God told them they could eat anything accept from the tree with the forbidden fruit. Once they did, He told them that they cursed all life from here on out.
Teaching Idea: This book is kind of heavy in the sense of the religious topic of sin. Because we live in a world where sin is prevalent, children should know and understand what that means and hwy we struggle with it. It also let's them know that they are human, and humans are allowed to make mistakes because no one is perfect.

She had heard word about him being the greatest in the world. When she showed up at his gates she brought him gifts, but wanted something else in return...Something that would be impossible to do unless you were King Solomon.
Teaching Idea: In this story, King Solomon promises to do whatever Sheba asks of him to prove to him how mighty he is. However, we learn that the moral of the story is that sometimes it is more important to break a promise than to do something wrong. This is a lesson in life we can all learn from, especially children at a young age. This means that we all have great things to learn from one another no matter how big or small we may be.

This took him many years, but over time he did what was asked of him and loaded his family and the animals onto the ark. It rained for forty days and forty nights. It essentially rid of all those who didn't believe in God's word and didn't have the strength within them to be faithful enough to do what was asked of them.
Teaching Idea: This book allows children to learn that they are a child and product of the God most high. When He asks of his children, he expects obedience and will reward those who follow through. Just as Noah listened to what was asked of him, no matter who made fun of him or what people said, he was steadfast in his tasks and ended up saving his family and the earth's animals. We should exude this same persistence and obedience.

Understanding the words and language is important, but also being able interpret and infer meanings, etc is equally important. I hope to dive deeper to make sure the children are able to understand and fully comprehend meanings and ideas, even when there is more than one, or their peers think differently with them. Being able to discuss and explore with each other, can broaden their knowledge immensely.

* Text Contexts, Functions, and Characteristics Strategy lessons that support students in understanding the relationship among the circumstances, purposes, and features found in written language*

A big part of Module 10 was basically about how literacy plays such an important, individualistic role in our lives and is all around us. In relation to the text set that I am forming--since they are all religious-based books, my specific purpose would be to help my students understand the circumstances and purposes of the Bible stories and the individuals in them. Sometimes it is hard to make sense of something when you don't put yourself in that position. As I talked about during my read-aloud lesson, if I ask my students to put themselves in Jonah's shoes, they will better understand the validations for him feeling, thinking, and doing what he did in the story. This then goes for any book. We all react in our personal way to things that happen to us, but if we think about the reasons someone else reacted in the way that they did, we will better understand the situation and/or story that we are studying.
