Lt. Whidbey was not the first to see Glacier Bay. He recorded that the indigenous people of the Tlingit people lived there. Could they have been forced out of their original land due to the advancing glacier? Alas, even though Glacier bay itself is encased in ice, native people carried on their activities in many places along the nearby coast and areas that may have been free of ice for as long as 13,000 years. Scientific findings conclude that the Indigenous people may have occupied the region long before the glacier’s advance

The Tlingit have experienced many setbacks due to Glacial advance and western expansion Multiple displacements and cultural loss. Despite these inhibitors, the Huna Tlingit society still stays strong, preserving and embracing modern life as well as a strong connection to cultural tradition

The Glacier Bay region was formed by immense energies generated through the active collision zone between the North American and Pacific plates. For 50million years, the Pacific Plate has been moving northwest along this fault boundary at 50mm per year, about the rate your fingernails grow at.

During the collision, the Pacific plate has been forced under the North American plate: Subduction. Fragments of the continental margin have been scraped off from one plate to another forming “terranes.” Four of which (these terranes) have accumulated largely in a northwest-southeast pattern to form the Glacier Bay region

Frequent Earthquakes show that plate activity still continues

The compression of this fault also generates frequent earthquakes. Some land is pushed up to form volcanoes and some land submerged downward and melted in the process.

*** So many different bedrocks because of this jigsaw puzzle

- The plants here are mainly those of the temperate North Pacific coast between northern California and south-central Alaska rather than the biota of interior Alaska.

- Glacial movements often alter the distribution of species. As glaciers retreat, a new barren land emerges. Highly adaptable plant forms begin to colonize this sterile environment. Seeds and spores are transported by birds and carried by wind to the exposed land surfaces. Lichens, algae, and mosses produce a fertile blanket on which succeeding plants can grow. These factors help promote primary and secondary succession in areas where the glaciers once were

- Spruce, hemlock, blueberry, devil's club, and skunk cabbage develop rapidly in the forest areas of the Glaciar bay ecosystem. There are approximately 420 species of plants found in the park.

The jagged crest of the Continental Divide splits Glacier NP into two climatic regions. The East and the West. The east chokes up air and creates a warmer climate than the west via pacific currents.

In the West, Pacific fronts bring heavy precipitation.

The amount of precipitation at St. Mary is about the same as at West Glacier; however high winds produce a drier, more extreme climate. Here, wind is the single most important climatic factor, one that affects every feature of the eastern slopes, particularly the vegetation that must adapt to severe drying.
