Why:
Internationalism is increasingly being seen as a way to move schools into the future.

What:
To unsure the presence of a true international element in the school curriculum and implementation in the classroom the overall coordinator would be able to oversee all four key areas:

· the stated values,

· the Development/Improvement Plan,

· the system of Curriculum Planning

· the system of Curriculum management.

This would provide students and teachers with much wider opportunities for participation in international work while enjoying their enriched curriculum.

How:
Responsibility areas:

implement international projects into every subject;
enhance community cohesion and parents’ involvement;
make access for all modern language students communicating with native speakers;
organise teacher international professional development abroad;
seek funding for European and Global projects and students’ exchanges;
gain accreditation for international work;
disseminate good practice through school website, national and international workshops and conferences.

I had a chance to learn how to write an international policy - a document that helps to establish internationalisation in the school. I set goals and objectives for this policy in Liepaja Centre Primary school. For example, to improve the level of key competences and skills, to develop transversal skills, to continue to integrate the global dimension into the whole school curriculum and to strenghten the proffesional profile of the teaching proffesion.

Today I did some practical work for my school’s international policy under this flag and tree. Nice combination. We are not living easiest times to do international work in our schools. But it makes it even more important, especially for students. Now it is so meaningful to let them see that we all leave in same world together and we can’t be afraid each other. There is reason every school need it’s own international policy and international work for students.

To create an international strategy and follow it is not an easy task. In the past I have done in a learning by doing method - with all the mistakes too - and then I have written the strategy for the school, and will do it for the next one as well. You have to be interested, you must have an understanding headmaster and some colleagues could be useful. But it is not all job, it can be happy hobby where you end up with huge network of good friends.

Today I learned that using the right words is very important. If you want your application to be approved you have to use the right words to describe your project. Your aims and objectives have to be clear.

Session 6

Today I learned that there is always an opportunity to connect core competencies to appealing topics. The most important thing is to let every colleague think along so that everyone carries the project and transfers it with enthusiasm.

“Transparency is a key word when starting a project”

Today I have learnt that it is important to create an Internationalisation Committee in order to include the different sectors that are part of the educational community. We need a coordinator who will act as the leader of the international work, but we also need the presence and support of the headteacher; a person who doesn’t teach, as for example someone in charge of the cleaning sector, as well as someone representing the council municipality. All this gives transparency to our projects.

Session 6

The smallest things give you the best ideas for a project. Be creative and think out of the box. We do it for and with the students.

The school’s main international policy is teachers’ professional development, that is an active participation of teachers’ in international projects whereas the key words of students’ internationalism are know, do, be. Know means to have a critical understanding of global issues. Do means the ability of communicating with people from other cultures. Finally, be stands for devoted global citizens who are actively involved in social issues such as fairness and sustainability.

By identifying the reasons for international policy in our school, we have confirmed why it is needed. Setting the aims and objectives of the school international policy will allow us to plan project activities and get involved in international projects.

Today I've learned how to be more efficient in writing papers in order to have more time for OBSERVING and DOING and CARING.
