The sheer number of interviews included in the book testifies to how many people helped McCandless at the same time he claimed he wanted to leave everyone behind. In his journey into the wild, Chris relied on himself to survive. He learned to be disciplined when it came to what he needed, and didn't have to communicate with others all the time, showcasing his independence.
