The Grandmother's hat symbolizes her selfish nature. She wears it so others will know she is a proper lady—even when she dies. The hat also symbolizes the grandmother's hypocritical beliefs. She passes herself off as a Christian, and putting the needs of others before her own should be part of her beliefs. However, the grandmother does not worry about other people—even her own family members.

However, after the accident occurs and the misfit's crew begins to kill her family, the brim of the hat is in tatters – much like her self-righteous and judgmental moral code. Toward the end, she drops the damaged hat (Bottom page 743), her deluded self-image falls away, much like the brim of the hat.

After her entire family is murdered in the woods, the grandmother is at last able to leave her selfishness—and her hat—behind.

If this story was told through another character's point of view, the story would have a much different tone to it. For example, if the story had been told through the grandmother's son Bailey we would have seen a lot of frustration. He just wanted to go on a nice family trip to FL, where his mother did not want to go in the first place. And then he is forced to take these detours which only lead them to disaster because of his mother.

The title is very appropriate for the story in that throughout the story we can see places where the grandmother continually brings up how rare it has become to find a good honest man. Where this title comes most into play is towards the end of the story after Bailey and John Wesley have already been shot. Here, the grandmother keeps telling The Misfit that he IS a good man and he can be better if he would only pray.

Rachel-
"A Good Man Is Hard to Find" I think the title is okay for the story because it does not give much away but it also foreshadows that they will come across a handful of bad men. The story also mentioned that good men will be taken advantage of like at the diner where the owner let someone charge their gas but never received payment.

There are themes of nostalgia, integrity, and what the real definition of a word is. The grandmother uses the phrase "a good man" throughout the story applying to increasingly suspect characters and it leaves the reader questioning what does that phrase truly mean. I think the author is making a point that words are subjective and context and interpretation are what give words true meaning. Ryan.
