"His own house in Bullet Park, eight miles to the south, where his four beautiful daughters would have had their lunch" (729)
"He shouted, pounded on the door, tried to force it open with his shoulder, and then looking in at the windows, saw that the place was empty."(737)
In the very beginning of the story Neddy seems to have a good life with a good family. At the end of the story he is alone and confused.

"We’ve been terribly sorry to hear about all your misfortunes, Neddy."(733)
This foreshadows that Neddys life isn't as perfect as he is making it out to be in his head.

"The place was dark. Was it so late that they all had gone to bed?"(737)
This creates a mood of darkness, sadness and loneliness. Describing the place as dark makes the reader feel sad about the place and him questioning where his family is shows how alone he is.

"He had made a discovery, a contribution to modern geography; he would name the stream Lucinda after his wife."(727)
"He dove in and swam the pool, but when he tried to haul himself ip onto the curb he found the strength in his arms and shoulders gone."(736)
The story starts out with youthful determination and energy and ends with weakness and a dark mood. This symbolizes Neddy aging, and his life getting harder as he goes on.
