Cornelius Vanderbilt was born May 27, 1794, in Port Richmond Staten Island, New York. He was in the American shipping and railroad industry and acquired a personal net worth of over $100 million with the money value of that time. Vanderbilt expanded his ferry operation after the war. However in 1818 he sold his boats and went to work for Thomas Gibbons as a steamboat captain. With this work experience he gained control of the traffic on the Hudson River. During his last years of life Vanderbilt ordered the construction of the Grand Central Depot. This project gave jobs to thousands that were unemployed due to the Panic of 1873. He died January 4th, 1877 in Manhattan New York City, NY.
