The day after the election a student told me their parent was probably going to pull them out of school, because even though their family legally came to this country and they are 3rd generation Americans the child's family thinks they can still be deported.

I have noticed and heard that students are afraid of being deported and fearful of what will happen after the inauguration. Students are also moody, anxious, high alert and feeling like people are checking out on them or that they really do not care about their feelings!

Our LGBTQ+ students have shared fears for their own rights and those of their openly LGTBQ+ teachers being taken away or infringed upon.

Beyond this, I have also heard much of similar to my coworkers here, with fears of deportation and racially-targeted discrimination.

A student told me that they did not want to come to school on Monday and that they were going to tell their parents that there was no school. Numerous students have asked what will happen on Monday. It's hard to navigate but I just try to tell students "the adults in the building will do everything we can to keep our students safe like we always do."

In the previous administration, I recall calling a parent through the language line. The interpreter asked for the parent. The parent asked, "Who is calling?" The interpreter again asked for the parent without answering the question. The parent repeated his question. This went on for a few times before I interjected and said that I was a teacher calling from his child's school. The parent asked me to identify myself first to know who was calling. The tension in the parent's voice was palpable.

I've heard a few students mention that things "don't matter anymore because we're all gonna get deported anyways." There seems to be a growing feeling of hopelessness among some of our students, which from an academic point of view makes teaching a lot more difficult.

I honestly have not heard anything.

Our students regularly use "gay" as a slur, in spite of the fact that I call them out every single time and I know many of my colleagues do, too. That, coupled with the anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment that's headed our way with the next administration, makes me deeply concerned for our LGBTQ+ students and families.

Students have been sharing stories of their family members' deportations and some about their abilities to return and some not. I have had a couple students ask if it could happen again.

I also agree with Anonymous Stork re: students seeming more upset, agitated, etc. (could be lack of routines due to breaks, could be political, could be both, but I have noticed it)
