         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Pharmacologic Class: </strong>SSRI<br><strong>Therapeutic Class:</strong> Antidepressant<br><br><strong>Use:</strong> Treatment of depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and premenstral dysphoric disorder. <br><br><strong>MOA:</strong> Inhibits reuptake of seratonin in the brain<br><br><strong>Admin Alerts: </strong><br>-Give in AM or PM<br>-When administering sertraline as an <mark>oral liquid, mix with water, ginger ale, lemon or lime soda, lemonade, or orange juice</mark></div><div>-<mark>Abrupt discontinuation can result in withdrawal symptoms (nausea, sweating, agitation, tremor, insomnia, seizures)</mark></div><div><br><strong>Adverse Effects: <br></strong>Agitation, insomnia, HA, dizziness, somnolence, fatigue. <br><br><strong>Contraindications:</strong> <br>Concomitant use of this drug with MAOI or pimozide is not advised. Antabuse should be avoided due to alcohol content of drug concentrate. CAUTION w/cardiac disease, hepatic imparement, seizure disorders, SI, mania, hypomania. <br><br><strong>BLACK BOX WARNING: <br></strong><mark>Antidepressents increase the risk of SI and behavior</mark> (especially in children, adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder/other psychiatric disorders). Do not use in pediatric patients with major depressive disorder but can be used for OCD in children under 6. <br><br><strong>Pharmacokinetics: </strong><br>Onset: <mark>2-4 weeks</mark><br>Peak: Unknown<br>Duratoin: Variable (due to extensive binding with serum proteins) <br><br><strong>Interactions:</strong><br>Drug: Highly protein bound meds (digoxin, warfarin, etc) = risk of toxicity/increased blood concentrations &gt; increased bleeding. MAOIs may cause neurleptic mallgnant syndrome, extreme hypertension and SES (confusion, anxiety, restlessness, HTN, tremors, sweating, hyperpyrexia, or ataxia). Caution w/other centrally acting drugs to avoid CNS effects.<br>Labs: ^liver functoni tests (asymptomatic), slight decrease in uric acid levels. <br>Herbs/food: St. Johns wort, L-tryptophan<br><br><strong>Overdose: </strong><br>None.          <title>Aspirin</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Therapeutic Class: </strong>Nonopioid analgesic; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (N S A I D); antipyretic<br><br><strong>Mechanism of action</strong>: as an anticoagulant, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic<br><br><strong>Pharmacologic Class: </strong>Salicylate; cyclooxygenase (C O X) inhibitor</div><div><br><strong>Actions and Uses</strong>: Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis involved in pain and inflammation processes and produces mild to moderate relief of fever. <strong>Significant anticoagulant activity and this property are responsible for reducing the risk of mortality following M I and reducing the incidence of strokes. </strong><br><br><strong>Administration Alerts:</strong></div><div>Platelet aggregation inhibition caused by aspirin is irreversible. Aspirin should be discontinued 1 week prior to surgery. Aspirin is excreted in the urine and affects urine testing for glucose and other metabolites, such as vanillylmandelic acid (V M A).<br><br><strong>Pregnancy category</strong> D.<br><br><strong>Adverse Effects: </strong>At high doses, such as those used to treat severe inflammatory disorders, aspirin may cause<strong> gastric discomfort and bleeding </strong>because of its antiplatelet effects.&nbsp;</div><div><strong>Enteric-coated tablets and buffered preparations are available for patients who experience GI side effects.</strong><br><br><strong>Contraindications: </strong>Because aspirin increases bleeding time, it should not be given to patients receiving anticoagulant therapy such as warfarin and heparin.<br><br><strong>Drug-Drug: </strong>Phenobarbital, antacids, and glucocorticoids may decrease aspirin’s effects. Aspirin may potentiate the action of oral hypoglycemic drugs. <strong>Taken with alcohol, pyrazolone derivatives, steroids, or other N S A I D s, there is an increased risk for gastric ulcers.</strong><br><br><strong>Lab Tests: </strong>Prolonged prothrombin time by decreasing prothrombin production. Aspirin may also interfere with pregnancy tests and decrease serum levels of cholesterol, potassium, P B I, T3, and T4. High salicylate levels may cause abnormalities in liver function tests.<br><br><strong>Herbal/Food: </strong>Feverfew, garlic, ginger, and ginkgo may increase the risk of bleeding.</div><div><br><strong>Treatment of Overdose: </strong>Treatment may include any of the following: activated charcoal, gastric lavage, laxative, or drug therapy for overdose symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, abdominal pain, or seizures.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Pharmacologic class:</strong> nonbenzodiazepine <br><strong>Therapeutic class:</strong> sedative-hypnotic <br>Mechanism of action: facilitate GABA-mediated CNS depression in the limbic, thalamic, and hypothalamic regions. <strong>Short-term insomnia management</strong>.<br> <br><strong>Administration Alert:</strong> <strong>because of rapid onset, 7-27 min, give immediately before bedtime. </strong><br><br></div><div>Pregnancy category: B<br><br><strong>Adverse Effects:</strong> daytime sedation, confusion, amnesia, dizziness, depression with suicidal thoughts, nausea, and vomiting. <br><br>Has been associated with the development of adverse neuropsychiatric reactions <strong>Hallucination, sensory distortion, sleepwalking, and nocturnal eating.<br></strong>Food/Herbal: <strong>when taken with food, absorption is slowed significantly</strong>, and the onset of action may be delayed. <br>Treatment of overdose: <br><strong>IV fluids </strong>should be administered as needed. Use of<strong> flumazenil </strong>(Romazicon) as a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist may be helpful.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
