The "Bystander Effect" is a theory in psychology that people will not help a stranger if others are around.

Do you think this is true? Write about an experience you've seen or been in that proves or disproves this theory.

Think about how this theory applies to "Cheboygan Day." Do the characters' actions in this story support or disprove the theory?

Themes are statements about a story that reflects a universal message the author wants to convey.
(Topic + author's opinion on the topic + universal application = theme)

Make sure what you've stated also applies to the characters in the story. For example, you might think one theme of "Cheboygan Day" is that sticking up for someone can lead to a good friendship, but Owen and Adele's friendship doesn't end well. Make sure the theme you choose applies to the story as a whole - not just one small part.

Write a theme for the story "Cheboygan Day." This should be a complete sentence. Explain why you believe this is a theme.

"The Lottery" ends in a very graphic, unsettling way. Shirley Jackson's intention for writing is not to advocate for violence but to warn others about how extreme "following tradition" can become.

Critique the story by deciding whether or not the message is clear. Did you understand what lesson she wanted the audience to learn? Why or why not?

Have there been any positive, loving people in his life? Who?
