Riis was a muckraker who had a change in history he talked about the issue of poverty. The immigrants who moved to the united states did not live in a good in environment. Most of the time they would be lucky to have a window or even a toilet to use the bathroom in. They didn’t have money to buy a house or even to live in a complex. So sometimes six people would live in my house or complex. His movement started when he wrote “How the Other Half Lives”, and this book exposed all these problems. Riis led to work led to better housing, plumbing, garbage, collection, and etc.

The 17th Amendment is the law that established the direct election of senators by citizens. This was a way to expand democracy and bypass the control of political machines. The 17th Amendment was passed in 1912 and ratified in 1913. This amendment was passed because during this time the political machines were overtaking the political scene. This was apart of the populist platform , this was a way to end political machines.

The 18th Amendment is the law that was passed in 1920, it established prohibition, which is the banned of alcohol. This law was passed at the hype of the Progressive movement, this was a movement that people, women mostly, started because they wanted to stop the men from the over alcohol use that contributed to abuse of women. The prohibition movement helped get this law passed.
