I then looked deeper into the other meanings of the word ‘Revolution’ , this time surrounding the political side. Then, similarly to what i did with movement, i focused on one subheading within the many subheadings to create a piece of artwork.

Jaime Reid

Jaime Reid (born in 1949) was a visual artist, mostly working in the form of collage. He did many different political compositions. I highly enjoyed exploring his way of working as it was very original and out of the ordinary.

Whilst focusing on the feminist side of politics, i focused on the sexual violence/assault against women. I followed in the artist Jaime Reid’s style, with the ripped and unkept, yet, tidy and put together way of doing collages. I found it very fun to do but the style of art also symbolises the anger and frustration of the victims in the situations they are put into.

Photoshop

The first draft of my experimentation with photoshop - i learned how to use the ‘object selection tool’ which cuts around the image of your choice. Its a very useful tool for wanting to cut an image out quickly. I used an image of my dog and two cats as they're quite an easy image to experiment with. Using the circle icon in the bottom right of the screen, i changed the background into a fading gradient , doing this made me feel like i was getting familiar with the styles and designs that were available.

I felt good about my final outcome of the first lesson on photoshop, learning how to create shadows and fading gradients to make an interesting background made me think about what else i could do for future designs.

AI Generator

We explored Canva AI generated art work to argue whether AI work is helpful towards art created by us or whether it was not. My argument was that it can be helpful when generating ideas, it may show something that sparks ideas in your usual artwork but because its so jumbled and so merged together, its messy and not real talent created by a human - its created by a robot who is given words.

Here are some examples of some of the generated work that revolves around 'feminist issues' - i do like this certain piece but it hasn't go accurate human proportions, there are arms and legs in random areas - which proves the point of its not reliable to use for actual art pieces.

Another example of an unreliable art piece as in the background with the many faces showing, their faces are distorted and in my opinion it just looks ridiculous.

I originally was going to base my ideas about feminism on this piece as I thought it showed quite a strong message of power in women, but as it’s an unreliable source of ‘art’, I didn’t feel as though it was as good as it could be.

Adobe Illustrator

Experimenting with adobe illustrator was very different to platforms I had used in the past, but it was interesting to see all the different options and tools to use. I played around for a bit with the brushes and shape tools to get used to the controls and it ended up being quite fun.

Sticking to a theme

Looking further into revolution, it was time to pick a main theme to go off. I made the long decision of picking Revolve - to do with movement. Within this decision came focusing on a certain word. After picking and spiraling many words off of each main part, I came to the conclusion of 'orbit'. I have a personal interest in space and the solar system and linking back to orbit made me think of the interest.

Character Design

As we had chosen our theme, we were instructed to create a character that could either be a significant part of your final piece or just to build up the skill of character design. As my theme is orbit and I was planning on relating it to space, I decided I wanted to create an alien girl.

With my first initial idea, I really thought well of what I had done. But looking more at it in detail, I was not fond of her hair colour. As shown in the image above, there was quite a few changed to the final character design.

After a lot of different decision making and experimenting with my character through: hair, hair colour and skin tone, I felt confident with the outcome shown on the next image.

I was very assured when coming to a conclusion on my character design. I was very proud of the final outcome of her and I felt as though I could move forward with using her in the project.

For more experimentation, we used clay to create our characters and made them come to life. As pandora had quite a lot of little details, I thought it was going to be tricky but I throughly enjoyed it and thought the outcome was as accurate as it could be to my drawing of her prior. Using clay as a media isn my strongest skill but as a work shop, I enjoyed it. I thought about my final piece and how I wouldn’t use it as I wanted to focus on what I’m doing in the future.

When creating Pandora, I felt as though she needed a friend. When I put two and two together about planets orbiting, I knew I wanted to include earth, and as an outcome, I create Delilah. The two character are meant to symbolise the two planets that orbit eachother. I experimented with Delilah’s character design, changing her hair, whether she was wearing glasses, her facial expressions and her hair colour, all of which in the end, I really liked the outcome of. She is similar to characters I have designed in the past and I felt free to design her in my own style which is my favourite thing.

Another piece we experimented with was story boarding. The technique is very similar to comic books and mangas that people can read through as it tells a story. I was a Bit unsure of the outcome at first because it is just messy sketches it I feel as though that if I were use fine liner on the time, it would be a better out come. Overall, it was a fun technique but I probably won’t do it in the future.

Tim Burton

Tim Burton is an animator, illistrator and director who has created a lot of well known stop-motion films such as Nightmare before Christmas, Alice in wonderland and corpse bride. I am quite fond of his art style and the way he goes about doing his stop motion. It inspired me to create 3D models of my characters. His style is unique and very different to a lot of other animation films, thats what intrigued me about his work - he's different and shows distinctive characters.

Trip to London MPC technicolour:

We took a trip to London's White chapel gallery to find primary images and art work that related to our own themes. Before we arrived, we viewed lots of different street art on Brick Lane, it was very fascinating to see the political side but also the randomness of styles and creativity. Whilst at the gallery, getting artworks and seeing what other artists create inspired me to research more about the solar system. Although they weren't actually at the gallery, there were pieces of artwork that reminded me of Nasa's commissions they do every few years. So, I focused on their work for my final piece. We also visited, on the same day, MPC Technicolor - a company who specialize in special effects in very popular films. They gave us a talk and showed off their very interesting work, which is another reason why I want to lean into the film poster/set design as it sparked a big interest.

Thinking about my final piece, I focused on some more retro-looking artwork from Pinterest as I had a certain idea in mind for a colour planet. In discussion with one of my peers, they said they think I should lean towards these types of colours as it was better suited for my drafted final idea. I agreed, and circled ones I would most likely want to use , colour wise. I was really drawn to the purple and pinks as the characters I want to use for my final idea, reflect their personalities through the colours Pink and Purple.

I enjoyed drawing my character design so much that I wanted to create a whole page dedicated to them. I fell in love with their designs and wanted to capture what their relationship would look like if it was to come to theatre or film. Leaning into the film poster idea, I originally thought about including them in my final piece as both of them do have correlation to orbiting, seeing as their planets orbited each other since the beginning of time.

Tim Burton response - creating 3D models

Creating the digital 3D models was enjoyable. As my personal preference is digital, it was fun to create her ‘animated’ and bring her to life. Although it isn’t the exact same way of creating models like Tim Burton, I wanted to produce a piece that also had a bit of my personal spin on it. I am confident about my outcome of both models as it shows my skill of adapting to 3D work.

Laika Studios:

Laika studios have created a lot of popular films in the style of stop motion. It really interested me because they seemed quite similar to Tim Burton. Both artists use unique styles but the main reason laika stuck out to me was because of their interesting facial expressions. in my opinion, When doing character design, it is important to experiment with different facial expressions.

Pandora:

Her background is that she lived on a planet which purely consists of green coloured beings. She was born with blue coloured skin as she has a rare condition that no one had sen before. After constant bullying and discrimination, she decides to leave her planet and venture out into the solar system. She finds earth. People on her planet had heard rumours about there being living creatures on this planet ‘earth’ but no one knew for certain. Pandora adventures out to earth, passing the sun, the moon and satellites. She lands her space craft on earth, in the middle of a wooded area. Where she meets her soon-to-be-best-friend Delilah, hiding in her favourite spot.

Delilah:

Delilah had an ordinary childhood. She was home schooled from a soon as she could walk and talk, which limited who she spoke to as she grew up with the social anxiety and fear of rejection. After trying to make friends, she ended up deciding she would be better off alone. One night, she got into an argument with her mother because Delilah no longer tries to talk or be friends with anyone, which led Delilah to go to her favourite hiding space, the wooded area behind her house. She’s lost in thought when she spots a big bright light. Little did she know he was about to meet her best friend for life.

Why I want to move forward with a set design or film poster:

The reason I want to progress with film posters is because I want to use the theme to create multiple compositions to do with my future career. I want to become a set designer or illustrator and with this theme ‘Revolution’, there is so much variety to choose from. That being the case, it shows viewers what I am capable of.

Every few years, NASA ask students to do poster commissions, and my take is that I love them. Every single piece of art they have received all have two things in common. Retro and colourful. In my final outcome of this project I would like to interpret their use of pastels into my artwork.

For my theme, I chose to zoom in on the word orbit. It comes from the word ‘Revolve’ which I thought I could relate to planets and the solar system. I have a personal interest in space and relaying that back to the theme ‘Revolution’ felt as if I had more ideas and a broadened perspective of it. For my final piece I want to create a composition that reflects on what I want to do in the future for a career - as an illustrator/set designer. Creating something to do with a film set or a film poster, it would express what I enjoy doing personally and what I am capable of when given such a broadened theme.

Whilst working with adobe illustrate for the first time, we experimented with different tools, one of them tools being ‘Image trace’ , which allowed me to select the whole image as it is or to select certain parts of it. It was interesting to see how different you could make certain pieces. Whilst in the ‘Image trace’, there is a gradient map that I trialed. The compositions above are the different outcomes when choosing different colours to merge together. It was quite fun experimenting and using the colour wheel to use the different colours.
