Personal Connection: I think going on a journey you know is going to be challenging but still overcoming all obstacles anyways is how I connect to this book.

Summary: Amy Anne Ollinger is extremely upset when her favorite book gets banned and gets increasingly upset as she discovers even more books getting banned. To spite Ms. Spencer for banning certain books, she makes it her mission to read all of them. She also starts a banned books library in her locker where she gives the banned books to other students to read. She was too shy to speak up about the book banning at the first PTA meeting but towards the end she spoke up about it in the PTA meeting and got all the kids in the school to back her up. In the meeting she tries to prove a point by listing all the silly reasons books should be banned. 

Personal Connection:  This book connects to the current book bans in Idaho. Historically, book banning has been used to try and control certain narratives by  controlling information, manipulating public opinion, and suppressing dissent.  The act of banning books can be seriously problematic for a multitude of reasons. Some of which include: Limitation on diversity of thought, limiting students' understanding of different cultures, historical events, and social issues and limiting authors' creative thought because they are afraid to write about controversial topics.

Theme:  Finding strength in our differences and accepting one's uniqueness.

Summary: Cece Bell tells her childhood story about contacting meningitis and losing her hearing. The story shows her growing up with a hearing impairment and going to school with a hearing aid called a phonic ear. At times she wished she didn't have to wear it and she was scared people would make fun of her for how it looked. Cece was self conscious about making friends so  he uses her imagination to see herself as a superhero who she calls “El Deafo.” Her super power comes from the phonic ear which allows her to hear her teacher no matter how far away she is and also tune in on conversations others might miss.  Her classmates think it is also a superhero. Ultimately, she learns self acceptance and finds her true friends. 

Personal Connection: Everyone has the desire to fit in and I found myself relating  to Cece wanting a sense of belonging. I think this book is great for students who have never met someone who is hard of hearing or deaf so they can gain a deeper understanding of what it may be like. I also think it is great for students who are hard of hearing or deaf because it gives them a story to relate to.

Summary:  A little girl named Sophie meets a big friendly giant. She is scared at first because giants are known for eating children. This giant (the BFG) is kind and does not eat children. The two develop a unique friendship. Together they make a plan to stop all the other giants from eating children. The giant has the ability to capture dreams and deliver them to other people. So with his ability he sent a dream to the Queen of the giants eating children. The Queen wakes up terrified  and orders troops to follow the BFG and help capture all the giants.

Personal Connection: I found myself cheering on Sophie and the BFG as they go on their adventure to stop other giants from eating children. The book reminds us that no matter how big or small you are, you are capable of making a change.

Harry meets his two best friends Ron and Hermione at Hogwarts. During his first year at school he discovers the sorcerer's stone.(stone that grants immortality.) He finds out that Voldemort is plotting to steal the sorcerer's stone. Harry confronts Voldemort and he and his friends work together to prevent the stone from falling into Voldmorts hands. 

Personal connection: Harry potter's journey of self-discovery, the importance of friendship, and the triumph of good over evil resonate with me and many others on a personal level. This is part of why the book had a lasting connection with me.

Personal Connection: This book brings back fond memories of cozy evenings spent with my mom, listening to my mom's animated voice bringing Dahl's world to life. It reminds me of the joy and wonder of childhood and the comfort found in storytelling.

Personal Connection: We grow and evolve as humans and with that means the relationships we have are dynamic and constantly changing. Sometime this means we can connect to the tree and being selfless in certain relationship dynamics. Conversely, we can relate to the boy who takes and takes without much regard of the other person in the relationship.

Personal Connection: The novel's themes of identity, acceptance, and the power of embracing one's uniqueness made me feel comfort and inspiration and encouraged me to celebrate my own peculiarities and recognize my strengths.

Personal Connection: One thing the book shows is that people make mistakes when navigating new situations. Personally,  I have made a ton of mistakes whilst navigating how to teach. I think making mistakes should be embraced because it shows resilience. This book shows that it is okay to make mistakes and that mistakes help promote growth.

Personal Connection: We often loose our imagination when we get older and this book reminded me of what its like to be a kid and how far your imagination can take you.

Personal Connection: I connect to this book because it reminds me of when I experienced teasing for my name getting pronounced wrong.

Personal response: I love how the book has beautiful  pictures that show off  the atmosphere of a big city. Before listening to the book I thought of graffiti as something that was bad. I'm glad that this book puts graffiti in a positive light because it truly is special. I think it is important to see the beauty in grafitti and the art all around you.

Personal Connection: It can be easy to accept when someone says you are just "okay" at something. But it takes real courage and confidence to know your worth and keep doing what you know you are great at until you get the recognition you deserve.

Personal Connection: Everyone can relate to failing at something despite wanting to be good at something. We all start off as beginners and we must get over the fear of failing in order to succeed. Pushing through difficulties and continuously practicing builds resilience and skill. Just like the boy in the story, he starts off as a beginner who fails and doesn't produce great sculptures but through all his trial and tribulations he becomes a great sculptor!

The book is a reminder that the best writing is derived from your own creativity and not asking for others opinions.

As the story progresses the boy finds ways to cope with the situation such as finding comfort in his father's company and seeing a bird escape the airport as a sign that he will escape one day too. 

Personal Connection: I think this book fosters empathy and understanding of homelessness. Children can see that the boy and his father dont hurt anybody and are trying to do their best to get an apartment.

Jennifer “just wanted to go” and thought her wheelchair would not slow her down but the way the world around her was built made it hard for her to have access to simple things because they weren't made accessable.

Personal Connection: This book reminds me of the importance of using our voice to make necessary changes. I don't have any direct experience with challenges due to a disability but this book sparked my interest in learning more about advocacy and the impact of individual actions on societal change.

Personal Connection: This book reminds me of when I was little and I used to ask my mom for a red eyed tree frog year after year. I would tell her that I would take good care of it and that she wouldn't have to worry about cleaning the cage or feeding it. I would tell her how cool I thought red eyed tree frogs are and how happy I would be if I could get one. She would respond with “the cat will eat it” “you don't even know how to take care of a frog” or “you would be too scared to hold it.” I think all kids can relate to a time when they tried to convince their parents of something they want.

Personal Connection: The book made me realize what my home means to me and how privilaged I am to have a sense of belonging and stability. In the book, it highlights the realities of being forced to leave your homeland and what it is like to have to completely uproot your life. To be an immigrant and to be a refugee takes a lot of work and it is hard to completely alter your life and take a risk not knowing what's going to be on the other side of a new country. I felt Ha’s frustration when she was trying to adjust to a totally new life.

Personal Connection: I can relate to women who pass love and wisdom down through generations. The bright yellow kitchen in the book is where the girl and her grandma cook and tell stories. This reminds me of all the times I was in my grandma's bright red kitchen while she cooked. She told stories to my family and I and that is where love and wisdom were passed on to everyone. 

Academic connection:The book has a lot of similes and metaphors. It would be good to use as a mentor text when intoducing figures of speech to students.

Personal Connection: I think this is a good social and emotional book for children. It talks about a very common emotion, fear and lets readers know that its normal to feel scared and also important to keep going even when you are afraid. I think this is a good reminder not only for kids but adults too. Too often, we let fear get in the way of reaching our fullest potential.

Personal Connection: I think this book is great for teaching children that it not only important to make sure everyone is included but also possible with creative thinking.

Personal connection: I think a lot of cultures have food that bring them together. I think reading this book and then discussing with students some of the foods their culture makes would be a good activity that is inclusive and welcoming of all cultures.

Personal Connection: I appreciate the author telling this story and being able to preserve culture and history in a meaningful and creative way. The hardships faced by many marginalized communities are often overlooked. This book serves as an important reminder of the resilience and strength of people who have gone through such hardships.

Personal Connection: This reminds me of when I wanted to have pin straight hair like my friends did. The more I straightened my hair the more I realized I looked better with my natural hair!

Zoe's mom explained that she must follow the rules at those places but she shows Zoe places where those rules don't apply and where Zoe can "stay wild."

Personal Connection: I think that Kids are constantly being told how to behave and to "act right." As a result their curiosity, wonder, imagination, loudness and playfulness is dulled from adults constantly telling them to act a certain way. Of course rules are important and we have to teach children how to grow up at some point but I think strategically allowing kids time to be kids is important and this book highlights that.

Personal Connection: I find it inspiring how Lydia grace is able to find joy through gardening despite the ongoing difficulties.

She then has to disguise herself as boy to help provide for her family. She goes on a journey of working for bribing money so she can see her father in prison.

Personal connection: In the book they mentioned conquerors all they way up to the Soviet Union. Then they mentioned war was coming to Kabul. Even though it is not explicitly stated I wonder if this is referring to the Americans coming.

There was also another girl (Shauzia) dressed as a boy aside from Parvana. She said that if she ran away her father would drive out to kill her. She mentioned that she is a good ‘son” but her father is not a good father. I wonder more about the dynamic between Shauzia and her father and who her father is.

Summary:  The Wild Boars soccer team and their coach, become trapped deep inside a cave complex in Thailand. The book recounts events and details of the boys and their daring rescue, highlighting the bravery and dedication of the rescuers involved.

Personal Connection: I thought the book had great graphics and it contained lots of information about Thai culture, religion and some of the immigration issues in the region. For me I was shocked to hear how the coach kept a calm demeanor throughout the entirety of the rescue process. I admire how he had the boys from the soccer team meditate to keep them feeling calm and not afraid. I also thought the Author wrote about the rescue in a touching way. When the divers finally made it down the whole team was filled with gratitude and gave the divers a hug even though hugs are not the "norm" in Thailand.
