While the commandant is a full grown adult who is fully aware of what he’s doing, Eva is still a teenage girl who deals with typical teenage stuff and her current circumstances. While Eva deals with the terrible things happening to her people, the commandant works in a death camp, and is one of the many who are responsible for the brutal treatment happening to the Jews. The similarities that both of them share aren’t as miniscule as you’d think at first. Like the fact that they lived through the same time frame, and that the events they lived through made its mark on history. I would tell them that disrespecting an entire group of people by invalidating their experiences is wrong. They were tortured and murdered, and it happened to 6,000,000 people. And, there are survivors that are alive to tell their stories about their experiences. It is very important to learn about the holocaust. One thing my dad says quite often is “We have to learn our history thoroughly so that we don’t repeat it.” That’s why it’s important to learn about it, because if we don’t then history will repeat itself. The holocaust was horrible, and we can’t let that happen again, even though we are. Muslims are being held in China and being tortured like the Jews in the holocaust. It’s a perfect example of how history repeats itself. For this, both sides require children, but one side was being treated better and the other was being treated terribly. Here, the kids get to talk about how they are doing in school, and how everything is going great, but in Eva.stories, Eva must explain how her hair was cut off, how she must sleep in a room with 10 other people. It’s like two sides of the coin. Here is an example from the Hitler Youth, “Hitler, the superb actor that he was, always began his speeches quietly, almost man to man. Then his voice rose, took on power, and his right fist punctuated the air in a series of short, powerful jabs.” here, there is no child labor. We should remember to never, EVER, repeat something like the Holocaust (or any other genocide) again. An example of the inhumane acts committed in the Holocaust is this passage I took from the commandant’s first hand account, “‘I think it started the day I first saw the Totenlager [death camp] in Treblinka. I remember [Christian Wirth, the man who set up the death camps] standing there next to the pits full of blue-black corpses. It had nothing to do with humanity—it couldn’t have; it was a mass—a mass of rotting flesh. Wirth said, ‘What shall we do with this garbage?’ I think unconsciously that started me thinking of them as cargo.’”  These things that occur in genocides shouldn’t be repeated, none of it. We should be aware of these horrors happening to people of different ethnicities, races, sexualities, and genders all around the world. These atrocities should never happen again, and yet they do. It’s our job to act against them, and choose to prevent them by educating others and spreading the word about things like this happening.
