"I never believed in Santa Claus. None of us kids did. Mom and Dad refused to let us. They couldn't afford expensive presents, and they didn't want us to think we weren't as good as other kids, who on Christmas morning found all sorts of fancy toys under the tree that were supposedly by Santa Claus."
This is an example of non-conformity because there parents never wanted them to feel left out or not good enough.

“I swear, honey, there are times when I think you’re the only one around who still has faith in me,” Dad said. “I don’t know what I’d do if you ever lost it.” I told him that I would never lose faith in him. And I promised myself I never would." (pg. 78-79)
This is an example of Chaos and Order because the hazy point at which fire and smoke reaches into the air fascinates Dad, who calls it “a place where no rules apply, or at least they haven’t figured ‘em out yet.

“You want to help me change my life?” Mom asked. “I’m fine. You’re the one who needs help. Your values are all confused.”(P. 05)
This is an example of self-sufficiency because while the mom and the dad forgot of their responsibility as parents, the book shows that they are actually acting in honor with their non-conformist beliefs which they see as a bigger responsibility.

All of Dad’s engineering skills and mathematical genius were coming together in one special project: a great big house he was going to build for us in the desert.” (P. 25)

This is an example of Fantasy vs. Reality because Walls tinkers with blueprints and plans on creating this fantasy home for his family.

“Don't worry, God understands,” Mom said. “He knows that your father is a cross we must bear.” (P. 105).

This is an example of Forgiveness because God has forgiven them and knows what they did, they can forgive themselves and others, even when they seem reflecting of their father in a negative way. Rosemary has the will to forgive and that's the beauty of it all. She just saw the best in people.

This picture of a church is reflective of the time when Walls was shouting out rude comments to the priest because he doesn’t believe in God and ends up getting kicked out, yet everyone forgave him for that.

As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had.” (P. 279)

This is an example of Unconditional Love because it lets all of the readers see how much Jeannette really loved her father, and how much he had impacted her life, for the good and bad. This quote is important and fully summarizes their father daughter-relationship, and that relationship affected Jeannette almost more than anything.

This picture of a hospital is reflective of the time when Jeannette sees her father one last time before he passes away. She went through the worst with him and still loved him for that because she came to value life.
