Pennsylvania was established by a group of people who were trying to leave the English Protestants to find a home of their own. This group of people was called the Quakers. They rejected the ideas of predestination and original sin. Quakers also granted woman an almost equal status as men in their Church. The Quakers were seen as anarchistic and democratic. William Penn was the Quaker who established Pennsylvania. Penn wanted Pennsylvania to be a place of holiness. He also kept good relations with the Indians.

Maryland was established by a man named Lord Baltimore. Baltimore was a recent convert to Catholicism and a shrewd businessman. He wanted Maryland to be a retreat for English Catholics who felt threatened by the Anglican Church. After realizing that there were fewer Catholics at this time the colony eventually set up rules of religious tolerance that assured freedom to worship for all Christians.

Carolina was reserved by grants from Charles II to eight of his court favorites. These grant holders expected to make large profits as landlords. They were members of the Anglican Church, but they allowed religious freedom in their colony as long as it was Christian. Carolina was never really one unified state because the northern and southern regions were so different. In the north it was mostly backwoods farmers who survived solely on farming, and in the south there were fertile lands with a prosperous economy due to the Charles Town harbor.

In 1664 Charles II issued another charter to his brother James, the Duke of York. The charter granted him land that included the land between the Connecticut and Delaware rivers, but it was mostly held by the Dutch. After capturing New Netherlands, James renamed it New York. New York was very divers, with people from Holland, England, Germany, France, and more. Although James was Roman Catholic, he allowed the people in New York to worship whichever religion they wanted to.
