The Paris Agreement on Climate Change Is Official. Now What?

The world renowned "Paris Agreement" officially went into affect this past Friday. the article describes the Paris Agreement, and how it is a hopeful first step to curving global warming. The goal of the agreement is to limit the Earth's rising temperature to only 1.5 degrees Celsius. but even that seems to be a big challenge.

One way to help this goal is to start a carbon tax in multiple countries. a carbon tax would make companies pay for how much CO2 that they put in the air. when people have to pay for something they usually use less of it, this is the knowledge behind a carbon tax. But most companies are reluctant to do this, and thy don't know how to measure the carbon they release.

The Paris agreement overall encourages countries to get involved in stopping global warming. and 195 countries agreed to it, but it is still seen as a difficult obstacle to overcome. Scientist see that some of the effects of global warming are inevitable, but with the agreement, maybe the effects can be minimized.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/04/business/energy-environment/paris-climate-change-agreement-official-now-what.html

Trump victory reverses U.S. energy and environmental priorities

Now that Donald Trump has been elected, he plans to put the environmental needs on the back-burner. he wants to get rid of the Paris accord that Obama helped shape, and he also wants to give federal lands for oil drilling.

Trump has almost no plans to help improve the environment. he claims to get rid of wasteful environmental initiatives. he also wants to start more local oil drill sites to help stimulate the economy, but that comes at a price that effects the earth.

Overall the articles gives foresight into how Trump will handle environmental issues. We can conclude that he wouldn't make many changes to help the earth, he would actually most likely do the opposite by taking away the groundwork that Barak Obama had layed out.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/11/09/trump-victory-reverses-u-s-energy-and-environmental-priorities/

Recently, the beaches surrounding England have been tested ford water pollution. surprisingly, the results came back very promising for the first time in a while. thanks to EU regulations and citizen efforts, the water results have come in more impressive than ever in England.

413 beaches were tested and 98.5% of them passed by the minimum of the EU limit. All of these beaches are monitored up to 20 times a year, and these are the best results that they have seen in a long time.

This shows that the green efforts of England and other EU countries have been partly successful in certain areas of the environment. This can set an example that other nations could potentially follow to help improve their water quality overall.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/nov/08/englands-beaches-at-cleanest-levels-ever-recorded

A new technology has surfaced in the world of renewable energy recently. scientists have been trying to find new ways to find clean, renewable energy. The ocean is a great source of energy and movement, and scientists have been trying to take advantage of this.

Scientists have found a way to use the energy in waves to make electricity. this is so useful since a lot of populated areas are located near oceans. the earth is covered by 75% water, and using this source of energy can help the environment overall, and countries should invest in these ocean projects.

Recently, the EU has funded Australia 9.6 million euros to help them jump start this project to see how effective it is overall. this is a big step for renewable, clean energy. Making ocean movement into a reliable source of energy is coming closer to being a reality.

http://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/article/carnegie-wave-energy-receives-erdf-grant-for-20161107

Why Scientists Keep Changing the Forecast for a La Niña Winter

Scientists are still observing the likely formation of La Nina. We have been in El Nini for a few years now, and the change is finally happening. but scientists are not so sure on how it will effect this years winter in the US.

As of now, scientists think that the north east will have a cold and wet winter, and the south will have a warmer and dryer winter. as scientists continue to watch this development, they are not so sure that the conditions are right for La Nina just yet. This could lead to a delay in the formation of La Nina.

Even though we are not officially in La Nina yet, we are still seeing the predicted climate effects already in both the north and the south of the US. Due to Atmospheric and oceanic conditions, La Nina is taking a while to develop. So scientists will continue to monitor this situation as it progresses.

https://www.wired.com/2016/10/la-ninas-not-whatever-lets-la-nina-winter/

"It's for the future": Scientists are cloning the world's ancient trees

Humans have apparently cut down 90% of the worlds most ancient trees. because of this, scientists have decided to start cloning some of the trees for the sake of the future. this has been decided since some of these trees may not survive the current climate change.

In California, scientists are cloning the Sequoias trees, which is a rare species of tree. they are doing this to reverse the trend of losing this tree in the future. To clone these trees, they have to climb the trees, up to 250 feet to get some of the freshly grown material, that is easier to clone from.

They also claim that this isn't for them. its for the future generations who may not be able to see these trees in the wild any more. cloning is a controversial topic, and for many people it is an uncomfortable thing to consider. but it is a very real part of our future.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/its-for-the-future-scientists-cloning-worlds-ancient-trees/
