Inspiration to start making a revolution

I did a lot of research and found that the Ghana revolution was one of the most successful revolutions carried out on the continent. I saw them on the streets instead of being in school and getting an education. So when I got home from that trip, I took some time to think about what I can do to try and help these girls back to school.

When I was 10, I started my Dream, Speak, Stand Up project and this is my education program where I basically try to get more girls from the African continent into schools.

Girls need help to reach the same level that boys are now, especially in terms of equal opportunities, whether that's education or any opportunity that comes along as they get older.

When I was just 10 years old in 2013, I began an idea, to talk to people I meet about the need for girls, especially on the African continent, to go to school until at least the age of 18. That way, they have more options in life and are not getting married at age 16, 14 or in some cases, 12.

So I started in Namibia and now I've done it in Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia. Just nine months after that first class, one of the girls who attended actually created her first documentary about her country to tell a children's story and she was even shopping on a local news network too, which I think is really cool. This encouraged me to keep going because it shows that the film class I'm taking is having an impact on the lives of the young people I'm teaching.

The American, of Nigerian and Mauritian descent, has been named an ambassador for the Sahara Foundation to stand up for the rights of girls across Africa

Seven years later, I've now spoken to more than 49,230 youths across 19 countries about the power of education, from Mozambique to Ghana, from South Africa to Kenya, across Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Egypt, and many places in between, ending in Sierra Leone.

At the age of 10, she became the youngest person to be interviewed by Forbes magazine and last year it named her one of Africa’s 100 most influential women.

The 'why' is no one can see into the future, but everyone can see the present. Everyone can see in my simple journey, what an educated girl with just a simple idea, can do today, right now. Fathers who were against girls education, now want better for their daughters - because they can see standing before their eyes, their daughters future. Mothers now see their lost dreams, in their daughters future.

Zuriel Oduwole was born in Los Angeles, California in July 2002. Her first venture into media and advocacy was in 2012 when she entered a school competition with a documentary film about Africa titled The Ghana Revolution. For this she conducted her first presidential interviews, when she met with two former presidents of Ghana: Jerry Rawlings and John Kufuor.

In 2013, after the release of her documentary film titled The 1963 OAU Formation, Zuriel Oduwole was profiled in Forbes Magazine. As part of this second documentary, she interviewed the President of Malawi ( Joyce Banda ), the President of Tanzania ( Jakaya Kikwete ) and the President of Mauritius ( Rakeshwar Purryag ). In March 2013, Oduwole formally started a project called "Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up", a campaign which was first launched at the Lagos Business School's Pan-Atlantic University, for the advocacy and promotion of girl-child education in Africa.

In 2014 at age 12, her self-produced documentary film titled A Promising Africa was screened in five countries. On 21 April 2014, Oduwole was listed as the most Powerful 11 year old in the world by New York Business Insider's in their listing of "World's Most Powerful Person at Every Age". In February 2015, Elle Magazine listed her in their annual feature of "33 Women Who Changed The World", alongside Fed Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellenand President of General Motors, Mary Barra.

Importance of STEM education

It gives people skills that make them more employable and ready to meet the current labor demand. It encompasses the whole range of experiences and skills. Each STEM component brings a valuable contribution to a well-rounded education. Science gives learners an in-depth understanding of the world around us.

In Illinois, for example, According to the June 2012 report published by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, educational demand for employment has grown and the trend is expected to continue. By 2020, 70% of all jobs in Illinois will require some postsecondary education. Yet according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) 2013 Nation's Report Card, only 27% of grade 12 students in Illinois performed at or above the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) proficient level in mathematics; 65% of students performed at or above the NAEP Basic level, resulting in 35% of Illinois graduating high school seniors who perform at levels below basic in mathematics.

Simply put, our students are not graduating from public schools equipped and prepared to continue on to higher education STEM programs or to enter the STEM workforce. Currently, there are more job openings in STEM fields than qualified STEM job seekers. This gap must be closed.

A student well-versed and literate in the STEM fields tends to be an innovative and critical thinker. He or she can apply what they’ve learned to real world problems, improving their communities along the way. High school graduates who are literate in STEM, transition seamlessly into their higher education careers in those fields. Ultimately, STEM literacy translates into employment in the increasingly knowledge-based economy we see locally and around the globe. STEM literacy means gainful employment in higher-earning jobs for today and tomorrow’s work force.
