Ratliff uses the example of John Lennon's "Julia" to exemplify this musical concept. He provides an in-depth break down of several of the individual lines throughout the song. Explaining that John uses emphasis on certain lyrics and somewhat over looks others in order to draw attention from the listener to certain words more than others. Ratliff says "... with a four-note phrase
V-iii-ii-I..." He later explains that Lennon's emphasis on certain syllables conveys his respect for the woman he is talking about, compared to the other lyrics he over looks by not fully annunciating them.

In this chapter Ratliff is arguing that through music emotion can be conveyed. He argues that this sense of connection to a certain emotion cannot be conveyed without the use of words and allows to listener to connect much deeper than by just listening to a symphony of example. He further argues the idea of Transmission, a deeper form of emotional connection to a song that only occurs when a singer strips their performance down to the bear minimum. Just a piano and their voice for example, and the performer fully envelopes themselves within their music, letting go of all outside influences, this idea states that transmission moves from the artist, into the music, and into the audience, allowing the deepest connection possible. With his argument being stated, I absolutely agree with Ratliff that music can convey emotion. Personally, I feel an emotional connection to most songs I listen to, I agree with Ratliff that it helps us to "...contain it, fix it, tag it...". Although, every once in a while you find a song that does convey that deeper emotional feeling that Ratliff is talking about.

One outside musical example is Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine". I personally believe this song has an emotionally connection to everyone, one because I feel everyone experiences heartbreak at some point in their lives, and two because of the way Bill sings it. His deep, slow, raspy, voice perfectly conveys the pain he feels when singing this song and thinking about the girl he's lost. Furthermore, the way he extends out the ends of several of his words such as "gone" and "everyday" allow the audience to feel how he longs for his woman when she's gone, as if he's extending out that note like he doesn't want her to leave. I believe this song is able to perfectly convey that deep emotion that only a song with words can truly do.
