Muslims are being discriminated against a lot in America as well as other countries such as Europe. The past 20 years have been very difficult for the Muslim people. Muslims in America have been treated very unfair just because they participate in the Islamic faith. One cause for the discrimination was September 11th, 2001. 9/11 was a terrorist attack that Impacted America greatly. The terrorists causing the event were Muslims. Although only 19 Muslims were involved in the attack this forevermore caused great discrimination against Muslims in America. Americans were afraid that any Muslim could turn out to be someone very bad. Another cause for all of this discrimination is that America is around 75% Christian. Christians and Muslims do not always get along. Christians are facing a lot of discrimination in the middle eastern parts of the world. This tension has resulted in Muslims being discriminated against in America. As you can see there are a lot of causes that contribute to the discrimination of Muslims in America.

B. How has the problem affected the community directly?

Discrimination has deeply affected Muslims and their communities. According to a survey taken in 2017, 75% of people think there is a lot of discrimination against Muslims in America. Muslim Americans and their communities have been affected in both in good and bad ways. Even though Muslim Americans have not been treated fairly this has not stopped a few people from putting themselves out for America to hear their voice. Two Muslim women, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar have won the most recent midterm election for their states. Tlaib for Michigan and Omar for Minnesota. This is bringing more confidence to women and Muslims. Although the past midterm election has been a plus for the Muslims there are also has been tragic events as well. In 2017 a mosque, located in Victoria, Texas was burned down. This great place of worship was purposely burned down just Muslims went there. This has made many people feel ashamed of their beliefs. This has resulted in people hiding their faith. Although Muslims are American citizens they do not feel belong in this country. These are some of the ways Muslims have been affected because of this problem.

C. Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue?

Americans should not be the only ones concerned about this issue. For example, it is not the first time in history that we have seen people been targeted because of their religion. In the 1940s the Jewish faith was targeted by the Germans. Their lives were miserable. This resulted in WWII causing the whole world to get fight each other. Now Muslims are started to be targeted a lot like the Jewish. As you can see history is starting to repeat itself. Because of this discrimination, people may stop coming to the USA. America is not the only place where Muslims feel discriminated against. In Europe, ⅖ of Muslims feel discriminated against. On the other hand in Afghanistan has one of the highest Muslim population. About 99.7% of the population is Muslim. This has lead to discrimination against Christians in Afghanistan. For these reasons, the rest of the world should be worried about the discrimination against Muslims in America.

There are a lot of people in America who are against Muslims. However, the people that support them are creating many organizations to help the Muslims. One organization is called the Muslim Legal Fund of America. MLFA focuses on constitutional issues Muslims face. For example, they want to help Muslims with the 1st amendment. This amendment states the all American citizens should be allowed the freedom of religion, freedom of press, and freedom of speech. In addition, the most recent midterm election in the fall of 2018 has helped Muslims. Muslim women Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar are both in the United States Congress as Democrats. This will show the rest of America should respect Muslims.

My name is Alima Farooqi. I am 37 years old, and I have lived in the United States of America my whole life. Ever since 9/11, my religion has been treated terribly. I remember being in my small one-room apartment preparing for the day when a TV alert says, “Breaking News…...Muslims terrorists.” Even though it was only 19 people involved in the attack to this day Muslims do not feel at home in America. It shocks me that America, this marvelous country, would treat their citizens this way. For once in my life, I have felt somewhat ashamed of my religion and wearing my hijab. 9/11 was not the worst day I have encountered because I was Muslim. One day I was walking my six-year-old daughter to school, and an older man came up to me. He called me a “terrorist” right to my face. My daughter looked at me in pure terror. I looked at her as tears began to pour down my face. I hate that my daughter has tgrow up during such a bad time and place for Muslims. I comforted her and told her not to worry. My daughter is now a very strong and confident young woman. I am so glad I have gotten to see two Muslim women win the most recent midterm election. I hope that times will improve, and I will be able to live to see more Muslims represent us and our country.
