         <title>The 5E Model </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Through the video and corresponding resources, I learned that there should always be some form of hands on interaction or inquiry taking place, particularly during the first part of the 5E lesson. This is because, as the video explains, the 5E model is based on theory and research that shows students learn best when they work out explanations on their own from both their own experiences and teacher support. If students don't have an ability to work hands on and interact with the content, it will be more challenging for them to connect their own experiences and see the greater picture of what they are doing. From there, this leads directly into the 5E lesson plan, as the first E is to engage. During this step, the teacher asks open questions, and can often have students study a phenomena or manipulate something, as a way to draw out what students know, or think that they know. Through learning more about the 5E model and what it is based on, I now understand why we are to engage students in this way. Overall, we need to ensure we are helping students to connect their thinking to the content they are learning, as this is when they will learn best.&nbsp;<br>Alyssa S.</div>]]></description>

They also need minds-on experiences.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>From the video, I learned that in the engage phase, students can act, draw, or write out their understanding to the questions the teacher asks. The questions help the teacher know what students know or think they know!          <description><![CDATA[<div>After reading from chapter 5 and listening to the video I think that there are many things that I took away from these resources! One of the main things that I took away was it is very important to have hands-on activities but there is also a huge need for student to be able to use inquiry. In the video the students were able to inquire about seeds and watch what happens when the students tried to grow seeds of their own. They were then able to build their own inferences on what happened when seeds didn't get sunlight or were not healthy. They were able to keep their interest through the engage phase. Then the teacher was able to explain and give vocabulary and concepts to the students once they have a basic understanding. Students then elaborated with one another and created projects explaining what happened to the plant and explaining what they have learning. I think that the 5E model is very interesting and fun and I wish I would have had the opportunity to have this when I was learning science! ~Hannah Reiff </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>From the text I learned that it's crucial we incorporate hands-on activities for our students to learn. Students can investigate much further when they can investigate with their hands. Hands on investigation leads to new levels of inquiry that only visual and text can't reach.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>From the video I learned how important it is that students<br>are able to take the lead in their investigations and inquiry. By letting<br>students guide their learning we are teaching them so many valuable skills<br>through their investigations and it leads to much more meaningful<br>conversations. Children’s minds are so powerful and by letting them go on their<br>own we are allowing them the opportunity to extend their thinking to new levels<br>and concepts we may not have originally planned for.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I learned a lot by watching both the video and reading the chapter. It was really cool to see the 5E Lesson come to life by watching the video. We’ve been talking a lot about it in class, but seeing it in an elementary classroom was really cool to watch. It’s very important for students to have a hands-on experience while learning about science because they get more out of it by doing things themselves! I know firsthand that I didn’t have the opportunities growing up to conduct experiences and investigations, but rather we read a textbook and that’s how my teachers expected us to learn and retain information. It didn’t work for me and I’m so grateful that there’s a model like this in place now for students to have the opportunities to experiment and be hands-on with their learning!&nbsp;<br><br>Hannah Hohwieler</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I knew that the 5E model included hands-on activities for students and that they are essential. Something new that I learned is that students must have a minds-on experience as well. This means students will be engaged in investigation by being hands-on, but it needs to allow students to construct their own knowledge. I really enjoyed watching the video of the students being engaged in a 5E lesson. The video showed the students being hands-on during the explore part, and it also showed them constructing their own knowledge about plants and seeds.          <description><![CDATA[<div>After watching the video and reading the padlet and book chapter, I learned a lot more about the 5E model and how it works. I understand this model and the importance of each "E" in the process. I found this model that represents the 5E model as a continuous process which aligns with some thoughts shared in the video. The 5E model is ongoing and allows students to be hands-on and interact with the lesson which allows for deeper understanding.&nbsp;<br><br>Something I learned (as well as many other peers) is the idea of the minds-on experiences alongside hands-on experiences. This allows students to construct knowledge around experiences. This makes sense because we want students to make sense of these hands-on experiences by connecting, thinking of new ideas, and wondering.          <description><![CDATA[<div>After reading the book and watching the video, I learned how important it is for students to come to understandings on their own. The 5E Model has students not only demonstrate but to build on their prior knowledge. Each "E" is just as important as the next. They all come together to allow students to be both hands on and minds on throughout lessons which as the book says is crucial. The idea of minds-on was new to me but is something I have always been taught just in a knew way.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I learned a lot by watching the video and reading the chapter. It really helped getting to see each stage of the 5E model demonstrated and explained&nbsp; with children in the classroom. It was interesting to hear what the classroom students had to say about each E term in the video. The reading was also very beneficial in breaking down the steps in a 5E model lesson plan. I feel like I got a better understanding of the terms and what they look like.&nbsp;<br>Something I found interesting and connected with was the involvement of literacy skills within the lessons. A lot of what students are learning ties into the literacy skills, similarly to what we learned in class.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I learned from the video that children learn best when they are expected to work out explanations on their own. They do this by looking at their direct experiences and from the support of the teacher. I think that it is cool that the students get to act out their understandings versus just telling the teacher what they know. I don't think I realized how important the engage portion of the 5E's was.          <description><![CDATA[<div>After reading chapter 5, watching the video, and looking at the Padlet, I learned that how connected literacy is to science and the 5E lesson plan. The video talked about how the students are incorporating literacy projects into their exploration of seed. The students created charts and other models to show their thinking. Dr. Nash's Padlet also talked about using children's books in class, which is what we focused on this week in class.<br>The video made it clear on what each step of the 5E lesson plan was. Before, I was confused about what each E stood for and what activities are incorporated into that section of the lesson plan. I liked watching the video to see a real example of how another teacher used it in her classroom.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I had a very minimal and basic understanding of the 5E Model before this video and chapter to read. The 5E is a great way to help students gain a better and stronger understanding of science through engaging, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. The unit will begin with a phase of designing interested and stimulate the students curiosity. Students need to be developing an understanding for themselves which is something that is extremely important in the 5E lesson plan. When we look at the 5E's we need to realize that there is not one that is more important. Each E helps the students gain a&nbsp; stronger understanding of science and its practices. While watching the video I was able to gain an understanding of how this style of teaching will play out in the classroom.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Through the video and chapter 5, I learned how important implementing the 5E model is in the classroom for students direct understanding of the content. Creating direct experiences and stimulating a student's curiosity through activities and content, students learn best. It is important to ask open-ended questions as a teacher that relate and reflect on student's prior knowledge. I thought it was interesting to learn about students acting out their understandings, this is a creative way to show their knowledge on what they have inquired throughout the topic.  The 5E model allows students to have choice in their learning, by creating ways to show their understanding and knowledge. I learned that it is important that students make sense of the content by elaborating their knowledge through different skills such as, writing, drawing, investigations, acting out, etc... And sharing their findings with classmates.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>What I learned in the reading and video is that students are not only supposed to be actively hands-on, but also "minds-on." This is a new way of learning science for me, but by watching the students in the video, they looked very engaged, excited, and interested in the experiments that they were doing. After reading, watching the video, and reading through Dr. Nash's Padlet, it is becoming more clear to me that teachers are really there for guidance while the students experiment and make their own connections and learning.          <title>After reading chapter 5 and watching the video, I have gained a really good understanding of the 5E model. Each E is strategically placed to foster student curiosity and lead them to learning. I would like to emphasis on the point that teachers can use this model so that students can lead themselves down a road of learning. Teachers don’t just teach, they allow students the experiences and put them in situations that forces them to think/discover for themselves.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The book talks about science being something that you do, not just something that is done to you. This is why hands on activities are so important in learning science. Doing hands on activities is what also helps students do "minds on" activities. The 5E model allows for hands on experiences that make the students create their own understanding.&nbsp;<br><br>From the video, I learned a lot about the engage part of the 5E model. The engage phase makes the students use a variety of medias to show their understanding and questions. After the students have created their own understanding, the teacher then will discuss the content in scientific terms.
