As a new teacher I find myself wanting to do too much all at once. I need to make a

conscious effort to give myself grace and know that I can’t teach them everything that I want to in a short period of time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and I need to remind myself of that.

Another way that I will challenge my thinking is to be open to the content that will be presented in this book. There are topics and concepts that I may or may not want to implement into my classroom and I will be open minded to this.

I have been using the "sending students to the back of the line" strategy when they are not following line/hallway expectations. My students went from being chatty kathy's in the hallway to completely silent. It has been a complete lifesaver.

Moving forward, I want to work harder on relationship building and asking more open ended questions to children. Instead of saying "please go get your book and do your morning work", saying "what is your expectation right now?" to hold kids more accountable. Shifting my words to be more intentional has been a game changer.

I have begun implementing the dismissal strategy outlined at the workshop before we head to lunch and it is proceeding with some noticeable success. After I choose the first student showing they’re ready, I allow them to choose the next classmate that is ready. The second student then calls the third and the third, the fourth and so on…we have yet to make it to the 18th student before it breaks down, but we’re getting close. I also realized that not all the students know each other’s names.

I will continue to build relationships with my students so that we can continue building that bond that makes them feel safe and loved. I think this is such a crucial part of being in the educational field that is sometimes overlooked. I believe you need that bond before you can effectively teach. Sometimes this is the only place these kids can feel that kind of safety.
