KS can be divided into 11 physiographic regions

Red hills: Indians believed that this area had healing powers

Glaciated region:  gets its name from the glaciers that used to cover that area of KS

Ozark plateau: extends to Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas

Arkansas river lowlands: formed of rocks of the rocky mountains

Wellington-McPherson lowlands: contains the natural resources of water and salt

Cherokee lowlands: a gentle rolling landscape of extremely fertile soil

Chautauqua hills: has low hills topped with sandstone and hardwood trees

Smokey hills: around 100 million years ago, this region was under an ocean that created various natural resources

Flint hills uplands: a well-known ranching area

Osage cuestas: contains East-facing cliffs with gentle slopes in the West

Bluestem and buffalo grasses are preferred by the native animals, because of these grasses, KS is a leading state in cattle ranching

KS is home to 1,600 different types of blooming plants, with an addition of 14 types of sunflowers

The cottonwood is the state tree

There are about 700 species of amphibians, fish, birds, mammals, and reptiles in KS

There are over 3,500 different types of insects in KS
