From watching tape I would say I need to work on not falling back on shot attempts so staying there to help rebounding action, and as the trail in a 2 man working more like a C, by starting at the free throw line and working up as I need too.

Welcome to the first Crown Refs Skill Development Clinic

This moment has been years in the making. I’ve been visualizing about bringing our community together in person for years, and now it’s finally here. I’ve had countless memorable experiences and highlights through Crown Refs—but today immediately rises to the top. I’m incredibly grateful for each of you. Your presence means the world to me.

This clinic is not just about the content, games and feedback. It’s about relationships. Let’s make this a tremendous relationship-building experience, where every official fully engages and connects with one another. Talk. Learn. Listen. Lift each other up.

One of the core themes of this day is simple but powerful: Contribute & Collect.

Every single person here has something valuable to offer. Share your best insights, knowledge, and energy—and take away everything you need to succeed. The goal is for all of us to leave sharper, stronger, and more inspired.

We’re creating a Skill Development Referee Lab—a compound environment where growth is collaborative and the team approach is everything. We all have an obligation to become better officials but even better human beings in the 9 hours we will spend together.

3 Ways You Can Contribute on Padlet:

1. Upload Your Game Clips – Use the Upload Your Clips section to share plays for breakdown and discussion.

2. Comment Your Rapid Responses – Head to the Rapid Response Scenarios and type your answers in the comments.

3. Leave Feedback – Drop your thoughts, takeaways, and constructive notes in the Clinic Feedback section.

Let’s make today unforgettable. Thanks again for being here—and let’s have an incredible day together.

—Paul

Morning Meet and Greet

I’m particularly excited to connect with everyone during the meet and greet session from 8 to 9 AM. Feel free to bring your coffee or breakfast into the meeting room area. This time will provide a fantastic opportunity for us to get to know each other, discuss the themes and focuses of the day, and build our community.

Games

The six games will take place on the hour from 9 AM to 3 PM. Each official will work two games, which will be observed by multiple Crown Refs coaches. They will provide constant feedback during the games through timeouts, as well as in the pre-game and post-game discussions. Throughout the day, we will have one-on-one and group discussions on the sidelines, as well as time for sharing insights and practicing sideline signals. We will create a Ref Lab/Training compound where everyone can contribute to and gather knowledge.

Post-Game Training

After the games, we will reconvene in the meeting room for a series of training sessions, recaps, Q&A, and discussions. We will have a group signal school session, followed by Rapid Responses training and coach management discussions. This will be accompanied by a wellness presentation over a healthy dinner. We have the room reserved until 5 PM. Throughout the day, we will also provide a cooler filled with organic coconut water, bottled water, and a selection of nutrient-dense snacks, such as organic beef sticks and whole-food protein bars.

“Elite officiating starts with being a great human being as the core traits become the foundation of your impact.”

Before the signals, the play-calling, or the mechanics—comes character. Elite officials are first and foremost high-character individuals who lead with kindness, humility, and integrity. They show up with respect for everyone they encounter and operate with a strong moral compass. They are resilient, grounded, and bring a positive mindset into every gym.

Officiating will test every part of your inner game. That’s why it demands emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and the ability to lead yourself through adversity. Do you let ego, insecurity, or fear interfere with your impact? Or are you a great teammate and a joy to work with? When you miss a call, do you recover instantly with poise and professionalism—or let one moment define your night? Do you quietly chase recognition, or lead with humility and service?

Elite officials aren’t perfect—but they’ve mastered their mindset. They bring consistent energy, emotional stability, and authentic confidence to every game. They embrace pressure, stay composed under fire, and find peace in chaos. This is the foundation. This is the inner game of officiating—and it’s where true greatness begins.

After ensuring safety and fairness, our job as sports officials is to get the call right.”

Elite officials are top-tier play-callers who display sharp judgment and a natural feel for the game. They are accurate with their decision-making from beginning to end—always in the right position, working within their primary coverage areas, and consistently & identifying the point of contact. They anticipate where the play is going and what could happen next.

They have a strong understanding of how to let plays start, develop, and finish before making a decision. They show high pain tolerance and the ability to discern between legal and illegal contact. They don’t react impulsively to contact but instead display patience and poise with their whistle. Great officials own their PCA, call from secondary only when necessary, and use a cadence whistle rooted in trust for their partners and the system. They never guess because when they blow the whistle only when they are 100% certain.

Play-calling accuracy strengthens every other area of your officiating. Let every movement send a message of strength, clarity, precision and control.”

Mastery of mechanics sets the tone for the entire crew and lays the foundation for consistent officiating. This includes sharp hand signals, crisp foul reporting, smart rotations, strong self and crew awareness of primary coverage areas, and dependable positioning. Mechanics are not just a standalone skill—they directly influence play calling, which shapes game management and can greatly impact the flow of the game. While each of the core frameworks has its own unique attributes, they are all deeply interconnected.

While movement and positioning are critical, it’s our signals that leave the strongest visual impression. Elite officials display a high level of athleticism, body control, and confidence through honed, fluid, and bursting signals. From signaling at spot of the foul the reporting area, signal presentation is the most visible reflection of your professionalism and dedication to the craft. It’s about being equally strong and balanced from both the right and left sides and creating the built-in muscle memory to make stellar presentation your norm.

Your mechanics are the messaging systems . that tell the story of the game. Stay sharp. Move with purpose and grace. Let your mechanics reflect your mastery.

They listen with intent, speak with clarity, and lead with purpose—turning communication into a powerful tool for control, connection, and credibility.”

This framework is often the most difficult to master—and the one that separates good officials from elite ones. At the highest level, communication is not just a skill; it’s a superpower. Elite officials are highly effective communicators with everyone on the floor—their partners, players, coaches, and the table crew. They know that the success of a game often hinges on how they handle its most challenging moments.

Game management means staying composed during heated exchanges, reading the emotional temperature of the gym, and responding—not reacting—to difficult personalities. It’s knowing when to diffuse a spark before it becomes a fire, and when to bring a firm, commanding presence that commands respect and restores order.

These officials have mastered the delicate balance of being both firm and fair. They articulate clearly, using rule-based language, delivering rapid responses, while remaining approachable and understandable. They don’t seek to win conversations—they seek to serve the game. That means saying the right thing, to the right person, at the right time—with purpose, professionalism, and poise.

In a profession where emotions run high and tensions rise quickly, the best communicators stay grounded. They are calm under pressure, unshakable in their purpose, and always lead with clarity, empathy, and respect. Because at the end of the day, managing the game means managing the people in it—and great officials do both with excellence.
