My Interpretation

The painting I chose, is drawn in 2D, the painting consists of many colours, lines and shapes. The painting was actually made during the time Picasso was using cubism. You can see in the backdrop, there is a consistent pattern of diamond shapes with circles inside them, but the colour pattern varies as it moves around the space. The main subject itself, both girls on the left and right already show the wide use of colour, lines and shape altogether. Their faces are a bit round, not an entirely perfect circle, which is divided into 2 sections with the use of a line, and also divided by colour. Their body also shows a variety of shapes, and the lines are consistent in the stomach or back area of the girl on the left, while you can see a pattern of lines and colour on the arm of the girl on the right.

In this painting, I have more than one interpretations, from the wide variety of colours, line and shapes, you can really make so many interpretations on how you see it. To me, I think the girl on the left, she has yellow on the left side of her face which I assume represents the sun, while the girl on the right or in the mirror, has a purple to gray gradient which I think this time represents the moon. To me, the sun represents lightness, good and hope in life. The facial expression of the girl on the left is more calm. While on the right, the girl on the mirror looks to be angry or shows a strong emotion. I think the darkness represent, anger, hate and despair.

Another way I understand the painting is that, the girl on the left is her general appearance or how she really looks like. While on the right, could be how she really is in the inside or how she sees herself to be. I think that because in the original girl, or the girl on the left, she is showing no emotion, while the girl on the right looks angry, I see it in a way the girl lacks self admiration.

Painting as a Form of Fine Art

Fine art, is a form of art, that focuses more on the aesthetic value, and its beauty, rather than the function of the art. Fine arts is solely derived from drawn art, and most common works are often painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Fine art does not necessary have to be beautiful, but it always involves creative expression. It can portray an idea, an emotion, or explore social commentary.
