elysium. a powerful kingdom that was both laughed at and feared. the king and queen were frivolous and covetous people, and their offspring were just as such. it was needless to say that the immense hatred towards the royal family eventually spread to the people who called that usurping stretch of land home.

there were many enemies. too many to count on both hands. when the lies, treachery, deceit, needless wars finally became too much, they banded together so they could all watch a greedy, blood-stained kingdom fall along with its rulers and everyone who stood by them.

and since elysium harbored no singular species, there were no singular enemies. it was almost akin to a tidal wave of supernatural beings flooding the streets, tearing through home after home after home; laughing in the horrified faces of their victims. they had placed a magical dome around the kingdom so no one could escape. no one could get out. the screams and cries for help could be heard from neighboring kingdoms, but no one came to their aid. . .

it was a massacre. bodies were scattered everywhere, and the freshly fallen snow was tainted a dark crimson. the fires had stretched high into the sky and burned for days, turning the snowfall grey for weeks.

what was once a bustling metropolis was. . . no more.

no skyscrapers lined the mountain side. no castle remained. no home remained. every building had been burned to ash. the entire plot of land had been leveled, flattened, stomped on like an ant falling mercy to a boot: helpless, tiny, weak.

bodies — body parts — were strewn all over the streets haphazardly, carelessly. spiked heads of the royal family lined the kingdom's walls as both a mockery and a souvenir.

and soon, elysium was eradicated from history books. with no one speaking one good word of the kingdom and of its people, no one thought it be fit that they would be remembered in any way. the city was completely erased. and with the dome preventing anyone from escaping, there were no survivors recorded as their attackers made sure to strike at the right time and make sure to get every single person in there. regardless if you resided in the city or if you just happened to be passing through, you were met with the end of a blade.

perhaps if they were a little more thorough in one particular home. . . they would have realized someone survived.

with a bloodline filled with powerful and successful mages of all ranges and specialties, there was always that chance that someone would be born without any abilities. nothing of use to contribute to society with. a human living in a family of immortals. a burden.

most mage covens often killed off their "human" offspring, for if they bore no magical prowess, then their life was forfeited. those who were allowed to live were condemned to a life of slavery, abuse, and mistreatment. it was a very cruel and greedy way of going about things, because in some cases, if some offspring happened to have immense power. . . it would eventually be stolen by the very people who created them.

the other mage covens thought differently and cradled their "human" offspring close, treating them like porcelain dishes that needed to be treated with the utmost care. for some mages, who had lost their real families long ago always long for some sense of humanity, of fragility, of innocence. so they would swear and oath to protect the "human" offspring. no matter the cost.

christopher happened to be born in one of those covens. and he also happened to be "human". . . powerless. useless. he was the firstborn, so of course there were high expectations. look at his parents, for instance.

his mother was a renown healer, whose remedies and abilities were able to save thousands of people. she was able to create cures for various diseases, illnesses, and poisons. she had eventually opened up an apothecary in elysium that garnered all sorts of visitors from other kingdoms and regions on a daily basis. she was charming, nurturing, intelligent, and even had the same exact eye condition as chris: complete heterochromia.

then there was his father. to be honest, chris never knew if people revered his father or feared him. perhaps it was a strong mix of both, because his father was one of elysium's arknights; the highest ranking knights in a kingdom. they are known to be brutal warriors who survived numerous wars. they have protected their kingdom for years upon years, having sworn a blood oath to the royal family when they were children. he had no choice but to take part in their useless tyrants and tantrums known as "wars". but by doing this numerous times and surviving, he was hailed a war hero.

so when news came about that they were expecting, people talked. people speculated. 'would he have his mother's healing abilities? or his father's strength? would he have both?'

the answer was neither, it seemed. chris was born without any magical abilities and despite his disadvantage, his family protected and smothered him in love nonetheless. it's not like chris grew up in a home where affection was scarce, however he always felt like the odd one out and that was to be a given.

eventually, his younger sister came into the picture, hannah. she was pretty much a mirror image of their mother. she inherited her healing capabilities and showed extraordinary talent, proving to be a child prodigy before she turned ten. then there was the youngest, lucas, who could somehow lift a couch single-handedly at the ripe age of four. it was clear he got father's genes.

chris' younger siblings flourished in their natural born powers while he struggled with trying to figure out his place in the world. it clearly wasn't with the mages, nor was it with actual humans. for a good chunk of his early childhood, chris really struggled with a sense of identity and belonging, never being able to shake the feeling that he just wasn't meant for this world.

despite this major setback, chris eventually hit a point in life when he no longer wanted to be the one putting limits on himself. he constantly shoved himself in a box and called it "safety" when it was really ignorance and avoidance. deciding to put himself to use, chris began training with his father; not only learning how to fight but learning discipline, humility, trust within oneself, courage, willpower, etc.

no matter his efforts, no matter the hours and days spent training, that nagging feeling always lingered in the darkest corner of his mind, scraping its talons along the cave-like walls of his mind.

then. . . things came to a skidding halt. it was the night leading into chris' 17th birthday. they came in like a tidal wave overnight, climbing over the kingdom's walls, pouring into the streets and knocking down homes. chris was startled awake by his mother and was given no time to process the screams, the smell of ash, burning flesh, blood — given no time to process how badly injured his mother was or even the sight of his half-dead brother cradled in her arms — as he was dragged into the basement, into the secret protective room built into the foundation. once she knew that they were somewhere safe and undetectable, she informed her eldest son of the atrocity going on in the streets of their city.

elysium was under attack. it was no real surprise, and yet it was equally horrifying none the same. no one was prepared for the attack, so none of the knights or soldiers had any time to even put on their armor before they were sworn into battle. there was a dome around the city, no one could leave, it was a free-for-all slaughterhouse and they were sitting ducks.

chris had no choice but to remain hidden underground as the ravenous murders continued above him. both his mother and brother died in his arms within an hour of them reaching safety, their wounds far too great for their bodies to handle. chris was too distraught and fear-striken to move from the basement, so he watched the door, convinced his father would walk through any minute.

five whole days passed and no one came to the door. chris knew he had to face what was out there eventually, but he was not at all prepared for what was to come. . .

the devastation hit him like no other. finding the mutilated corpses of his sister and father, along with the beings responsible for their deaths — a master vampire and a powerful necromancer, both of which took a creepy liking to christopher. the master vampire wasted no time to get a taste of him, and was not at all gentle about it, while the necromancer took his time torturing and assaulting chris. it was a cruel back and forth. just when he was on the brink of death, they show mercy.

they leave him for dead.

they tie him up, make him watch as they burn and tear down elysium's lone standing building — the castle — before abandoning him in the mountainside with an eerie promise: if you survive this, we will meet again.

severely injured and clinging to life, chris wandered the vast forest for days before collapsing. this is when something dramatic changed in him and he was morphed into something different, something darker, meaner. it was like something invaded him, body and soul, and nestled into the crook of his subconscious to make a home there. it was excruciating and disorienting, to be on the brink of death on minute then feel uncontrollable power coursing through your veins the next.

sometimes, chris wondered if he were a latebloomer or simply cursed. . .

one minute, he was on the forest floor staring up at the overcast sky about to take his last breath when all of a sudden it was as if the air was punched back into his lungs. something foreign, dark, and powerful invaded his senses and consumed him like ink in water.

in and out of consciousness, chris continued blindly making his way through the trees when more trouble found him. a pack of greedy men. well, from what they looked like on the outside at least. when it became apparent that they had ill intentions, christopher did his best to fight them off despite his own circumstances. and through the blurry images of that particular night, he vividly remembers tearing them apart with his bare hands.

the surviving three men managed to subdue chris and hold him hostage, subjugating him to all sorts of torture methods as revenge for killing their buddies.

chris was repeatedly drugged, beaten, and assaulted over the course of four days. by noon on day five, dripping crimson and brain matter was the new wallpaper.

turns out, killing off this group of greedy men was somewhat of a good thing; it actually got him the help he needed. that's when chris learns that he. . . no longer was human. not fully, at least.

somewhere somehow, the necromancer that attacked elysium was killed off and as a last resort to continue 'living', a back-up spell was created to bind his essence and power to someone who was of the living. when the necromancer first met chris, he had branded him without the other knowing so that there was an escape window ready when things go south.

essentially: chris doesn't know if the powers he has are his own. . . or someone else's.

two men eventually found their way to chris after hearing about the slaughter and offered him a deal too good to be true. spoiler alert: it was. they tricked him, lied to him. took advantage of his emotionally vulnerable state by saying they heard reports of survivors from elysium, promised him all sorts of things to keep him coming until they had him right where they wanted him. . . and snatched him up.

they offered vaguely explained 'tests' that were supposed to help chris discover and master his newfound abilities. however, there was an underlining ulterior motive beneath said tests that would eventually come to light the day chris first tried to defy them. those tests weren't just made to help broaden his horizons, they were made to point out his weaknesses. and there was one particular weakness that stood out amongst the rest: electricity. they decided to test a theory that day when chris tried to size one of them up, and it was a huge success. chris crumbled the second the electricity hit him and was rendered powerless for a good amount of time. this was when the two men put their real plan into motion.

ownership. they never intended to give chris freedom or help him fit into this city. they wanted to own him. after seeing how much promise this fresh out of the box metahuman harbored with only half of his abilities unlocked, they wanted chris all to themselves — and so they made it happen. they forwent all normal procedures and illegally bound christopher to them under a master and slave contract. he was forced to do their bidding from that point forward or else they'd use another theory on him, and it was always the same thing just executed differently each time. they got creative with it, and eventually, christopher began to fear them.

living under the guise of being a master with full reign of his freedom while, in all actuality, there were invisible shackles around his ankles, chris grew into something he never thought he'd become.

his masters deemed it fit that he become their errand boy, as they so lovingly called it. chris got his hands dirty for them. he killed for them. he spilled blood for them. he burned down houses for them. he ended family bloodlines for them. he did whatever they asked him to, otherwise would not be a pretty scene.

not wanting anyone to know who he was, chris chose to isolate himself. he chose a random, barely held together shack on the outskirts of town and moved in and created a double life for himself; hoping to feel the warmth of normalcy around the cold steel of a blood tie. he got a job as a bouncer at the nightclub, bought an abandoned shop and opened up a tattoo parlor, attended festivities and gatherings, entertained the idea of "slaves", anything to be and look normal. unsuspecting.

for the next four decades, chris has remained in the same shack, has remained under the same facade, has worn the same mask, has wielded the same blood-soaked sword, has fought the same fight time and time again; knowing that he will die never knowing what it was like to live.

everything went sideways quick. an argument started only to escalate into a fully blown out brawl. most of it is a blur, bits and pieces of the attack remain scorched in his memory — playing like a vinyl track spinning 'round and 'round. despite chris' own strength and decent abilities, trying to take care of two supernatural beings (one being a shape-shifter with a wild variety and the other being some sort of literal god) while drugged and barely able to see was pushing it.

surviving the ambush cost him his freedom — and access to his powers. now, there is a seal tattooed on the back of his neck that acts as a barrier between him and, quite literally, everything else; triggering an extremely powerful electrical current that travels head to toe that lasts hours anytime chris tries to push it.

it's an invisible ball and chain that's shackled to him everywhere he goes.

chris first arrived in ivory as a master, as the conductor of his own life. making his second return after going missing for seventeen months, he is a slave getting his hands dirty with no compensation or even a fucking 'thank you'. chris doubts his disappearance bothered anyone. he sincerely hopes no familiar faces end up walking into his path — carrying the secret of his situation and fragile vulnerability, chris is not dumb enough to let it slip to anyone.

he's a lamb in wolf's clothing trying to blend in with the rest of the pack.

his masters only allowed this return under one promise: to continue doing their dirty work, just with more rules to follow. chris has a curfew now, being forced to return "home" at a certain time only to be locked up in the dungeon and tortured how they deem fit. they never feed him there and also never gave him any income so getting ahold of a good meal was seldom to none.

if he talked back, the mark would electrocute him. if he didn't say 'yes sir', the mark would electrocute him. if he was late returning to them for whatever reason, reasonable or not, they would electrocute him until he'd pass out. they exploited his biggest weakness and enjoyed themselves while doing so.

and that's not the only thing they did to further take control over chris. . . they killed his devoted familiar, daemon. a red eyed raven that's been with him since day one. truthfully, daemon was the only companion he had. to make matters worse, his masters not only resurrected daemon but they rewired the bird entirely so that it's going against chris. now, daemon acts as a spy for his masters. it watches chris' move from a distance and reports back with any updates. to anyone else, it would just look like a regular bird sitting in a tree. harmless.

these days, chris does his best to keep to himself, despite some people's insisting knocking. some people have something in mind for him, others want something from him. either way, chris has little choice in the matter otherwise he risks exposing everything.

only armed with his fists, wit, and whatever weapon he can salvage, chris has to navitage through ivory while trying to keep himself alive to see the next day. with daemon's watchful on him all the time, there is little chris can do in secrecy however he has figured out how to slip things in and out without the bird or those two pricks knowing. chris knows he doesn't have much time before their methods, and/or their contracts, kill him. no defenses, barely even an offense — he knows this will end in blood one way or another. . . whether it be his or theirs.

▬ small story: these were the first abilities to manifest right off the bat. the second chris was 'reborn', he was hit with it all at once and it only made him more disoriented. he fell into a brief coma as his body struggled to adapt to the changes it was forced to undergo. it was an extremely trying period. the only spells he was able to do were protective wards/runes.
