If translated literally, the name of the holiday means “holy evening,” but it was previously known as All Saints' Eve. Eventually, the name was shortened to “Halloween,” which people around the world know and love to this day. Halloween was first mentioned in 1745. It is believed that the celebration has a pagan history - the Celts celebrated the harvest and the alternation of light and dark seasons (Samhain). They also believed that on this day the worlds of the living and the dead intersect. However, there are many other interesting facts that you have hardly heard of.

The celebration of Christmas in the United States begins with a mandatory midnight mass on the night of December 24 to 25. People can also visit church during the day.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, the whole family gathers at the table and exchanges gifts. The celebration may also continue with a family dinner on December 25.

For Americans, Christmas is a family holiday, so most people travel to visit relatives. It might be one of the few reunions of the year, as family members often live in different states. That’s why Christmas evenings are so cherished.

In America they love to celebrate Christmas. This is their favourite holiday. Americans wear Christmas pajamas or clothes at Christmas and give each other gifts. Christmas is selebrated on the night from December 24 to 25 it was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory 13.

There are a lot of different traditions on how to celebrate Christmas. People in the United Kingdom decorate their homes with wreaths, ornaments and Christmas trees. City streets are filled with coloured lights; the sound of bells and tuneful Christmas carols can be heard everywhere.

Children usually write letters to Santa Claus and tell him what kind of gifts they would like to get. A lot of malls hire people to wear a Santa costume and listen to children's requests. Also, children believe that he arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and brings presents. Some kids hang up stockings for Santa to fill them with candies, fruit and other small gifts.

Adults like to celebrate this holiday as well. Many companies throw corporate parties and give presents to their employees.

My family attends church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. We listen to readings from Bible. In the evening we sit down to festive table, light the candles and enjoy the delicious supper. My favourite dishes are a fruit salad and a roast goose.

I like this feast very much because it inspires people with belief in the realness of miracles. I suppose we will celebrate this feast for centuries in future.

People have celebrated Valentine’s Day with thoughts of love since at least the 1300s. According to an old legend, February 14 is the day when birds pair off each year to start their new families. February 14 is called Valentine’s Day because the Roman Catholic Church honors two saints named Valentine on that day. Both Saint Valentines were ancient Romans of the 200s ce who died for their Christian faith.

Groups of young men and women once celebrated Valentine’s Day by picking up valentines from a box. The person whose valentine was picked up would become the picker’s “valentine” for a year.

It is customary to celebrate Thanksgiving in the family circle. Relatives and friends come from all over the country for a common table with traditional dishes. Thanksgiving must-haves include stuffed turkey with cranberry jam and sweet pumpkin pie.
