Lesson Plan and Reflection

This lesson works to help young children learn the difference between a situation that is a big deal versus a situation that is a small deal. This lesson plan uses visuals and hands-on stimuli that allow the students to label various situations as a big deal or a small deal. This lesson addresses the Mindsets and Behaviors standards of self-discipline/self-control and effective coping skills. My population of choice is kindergarten through 5th grade, so I could face problems adapting this to older grades, especially where the subject content is understood, but the coping skills need to be taught. It could also be challenging as grade levels change because specific situations might be interpreted as different intensities at different ages. One example of this can be seen in the sample situation: "You fail a subject because you did not finish your work." While failing a subject to an older student in elementary might be seen as a negative, it could be argued that kindergarteners do not have the social awareness to understand the negative aspects of failing a subject. This also points to the potential challenge that this subject matter is all subjective, and all situation scenarios may not impact all students equally.

The school counseling scope of practice is specific to helping students with academic, social/emotional, and career services. This means that a school counselor can be expected to help students when they have disciplinary problems within the school, but they are not expected to act as a mental health counselor for the long-term student (American School Counselor Association, 2019). School counselors are expected to help collaborate with teachers to build effective classroom management styles but are not expected to supervise the teachers (American School Counselor Association, 2019). The school counseling scope of practice explores the roles and expectations that a school counselor is supposed to follow compared to the other roles in the school setting. This is important to school counselors because it is essential to understand what is expected on a daily basis and what roles and expectations should be carried out by the school counselor.

Comprehensive School Counseling Program

A comprehensive School Counseling Program is understanding all the elements that make up a successful and impactful school counseling program. These can be broken into four categories- define, manage, deliver, and assess (American School Counselor Association, 2019). Define is categorized by any standards or guidelines representing the different elements governing school counseling, such as ethical standards (American School Counselor Association, 2019). Manage is categorized by offering the tools needed to guide school counselors in creating and maintaining a successful school counseling program. One main focus of this category is the vision statement of the school counselor, which outlines their beliefs about the profession (American School Counselor Association, 2019). The deliver category outlines how school counselors present their activities and interventions (American School Counselor Association, 2019). These delivery methods are either broken into direct or indirect services. Finally, the assess category is used by school counselors to understand and evaluate their programs for effectiveness (American School Counselor Association, 2019). These four ASCA School Counseling Model components work together to create a program that addresses all necessary aspects of school counseling while ensuring that the program offers the most effective services to students.

Academic Development

Academic development is one of the three broad domains that guide school counseling programs. Academic development is the domain that focuses on activities and strategies that will help a student learn (American School Counselor Association, 2019). This domain is essential in school counseling because it allows the school counselor to help support students while they are in school and learning. Without academic development, a school counselor would not support a student's ability to learn and grow into an academically sound individual.

Career Development

Career development is another domain into which the main competencies of school counseling are broken. Career development is the domain that focuses on connecting students' academic journey to the professional world and helping them plan for their futures as either college students or professionals and beyond (American School Counselor Association, 2019). This domain is essential for school counselors because it helps them connect their students to the real world and helps them prepare for what comes after school.

Social/Emotional Development

Social and emotional development is the final of the three domains that organize the competencies that make up the school counseling profession. Social and emotional development includes the competencies that help students learn how to manage their emotions, live in the social world, and have interpersonal skills (American School Counselor Association, 2019). This domain is important for school counselors because it teaches students how to manage life and the emotions humans face and will face in their futures. As a school counselor, teaching these skills is essential to guiding students to be emotionally and socially healthy individuals.

ASCA Mindset and Behaviors

These standards are broken into two categories, mindset and behaviors. The mindset category focuses on standards that are related to the beliefs or attitudes that students have about themselves related to their academic career (H). The behaviors category outlines behaviors that correlate with being a successful student. This category has three subcategories: Learning strategies, self-management, and social skills. All show specific actions that show that a student is demonstrating the desire to learn and do their best work (American School Counselor Association, 2019). The ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors is important to school counselors because it offers a list of guidelines of what a school counselor can aim to inspire in their students and implement a successful school counseling program.

ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors

The ASCA Ethical standards for school counselors are a list of expectations required of all school counselors to ensure the professionalism, integrity, and guidance offered by the school counselor is held to the highest standard (American School Counselor Association, 2019). These ethical standards are part of everything a school counselor does in their profession and include responsibilities to the students, themselves, and the other stakeholders in and outside of the school (American School Counselor Association, 2019). These ethical standards are critical to the school counselor because they ensure everyone is given the best care while staying safe and respected.

This could elevate a school counselor's impact on students and how they can connect and build relationships that lead to the most successful counseling programs.

These direct services are important to school counselors because they allow them to connect with the other stakeholders in the student's lives, and they allow school counselors to address some issues at a larger and more inclusive scale.

Program Assessment- Program Assessment is used as part of the Assess portion of the ASCA national model. This tool evaluates the progress toward implementing a comprehensive school counseling program and determines where it needs extra work and its strengths (American School Counselor Association, 2019).

Annual Results Reports- Annual Results Reports are used as assessment tools to understand the effectiveness of school counseling programs (American School Counselor Association, 2019). These reports include data collection on participation, mindsets and behaviors, and outcomes of program implementation (American School Counselor Association, 2019). These are used as tools to understand the effectiveness of programs using data collected.

School Counselor Assessment and Appraisal- A multifaceted process for understanding the effectiveness of a school counseling program (American School Counselor Association, 2019). It includes self-assessment, individual reflection of the data, and appraisal of the performance of a school counselor by an administrator who is qualified to do so (American School Counselor Association, 2019). This assessment and appraisal is used to understand a program's effectiveness and offer self-assessment.
