WHAT IS 'HOUSE STYLE'?

House style refers to the specific usage and editing conventions followed by writers and editors to ensure stylistic consistency in a particular publication or series of publications. This means what I have kept up throughout my series of work, in order to link everything together and make sense, meaning the continuity of everything.
Throughout this project, I have conducted a certain type of house style. This includes the types of font I used, which colour scheme I created, and also my use of mise-en-scene. It is important for a certain media product, to have a house style, to ensure consistency across all documents, supporting the brand recognition. By paying attention to the type of house style used in my media products this will create a specific brand identity, which will help the audience to have a strong image in their head when they think about my product or brand.
The house style in which I have created focuses on the star image of the artist. The images I have taken of my artist and used throughout my digipak and promotional poster, promote the artist's style and personality. Throughout my products, my artist portrays a vulnerable young lady, feeling alone and stuck in her decisions (Music video), however, throughout the video we do get to see her personality and style in terms of mise-en-scene, for example, her clothing being very urban, vintage and casual. Due to my type of target audience, being mostly female teenagers and young adults, this would appeal to them very much so, being someone they can relate to and look up to.
As I created my Digipak and Poster, I decided I wanted my target audience to get to know 'Neve' much more, therefore through my use of editing and adding colours to the picture, etc, I believe I have shown the artist to be a unique and interesting artist.
Whilst doing this, I made sure to do some research on other artists such as my inspiration for this project, Mabel, and other urban, indie pop/ R&B artists such as Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and

HOW I CREATED A BRAND IDENTITY THROUGHOUT MY MUSIC VIDEO, DIGIPAK AND POSTER

To the left, is an image of the artist, 'Neve'. I created a brand identity for my artist, highlighting certain aspects of Niamh's personality and making them what Neve will be known for.
For example her clothing and style. Niamh is very bold in her clothing choice, being into vintage and urban style clothing. This was one of my main reasons for choosing her to portray my artist. I knew she fitted the role perfectly because of this.
One example of Neve's brand identity is her style.
Another aspect is her hair. As Niamh likes to colour her hair regularly, I decided to portray this through my Digipak. Instead of editing the hair back to her original colour, I wanted to keep and enhance the colour, (blue/ green.)
I want to portray my artist in a positive light, being different and breaking rules. This is also the message I wanted to send to my target audience who are teenagers and are always prone to peer pressure and social standards.
Throughout my music video, I have added an old, vintage effect to it, and at the end an effect copying that of when a TV has been switched off, displaying it is the end of the video. These are ways in which I have secretly shown off my artist's Brand identity. Not many artists add unique effects to their videos, however, i decided to in order to present the video as aesthetic, whilst setting the mood of sadness throughout the video.
For my digipak and promotional poster, I used the same font, being very bold and quite unique, again, showing off Neve's brand identity, being herself and standing out.
The font I used is unique and used only for things associated with the artist, therefore it will be easier for her target audience to recall her brand.
Also, throughout the making of my digipak, I took and included very similar pictures on each page. This was done in order to show off the artist's looks, but also to link the whole album together in terms of its style. These were a variety of close up and medium shots. One of the images stands out in particular, as it has been taken in a unique way. Niamh is holding up a vintage, flower style mirror to her face and looking into it, directly into the lens of the camera. It displays herself in the frame but mainly her reflection. The style of the album is the same throughout, with the same colour scheme and font, etc. The colour scheme is dark purple/pink and red, alongside the colour of her hair which is a bright blue. This was to represent her personality as an artist, being bold and different. Also, pink and red connote the feeling of love whereas blue contrasts, giving a sense of sadness and loneliness, which is represented throughout the songs on the album.
By using the same image as my Digipak on the front cover, for my poster is important as it then links together and will be easily recognised by potential customers.

HOW WOULD MY POSTER HELP TO SELL THE ALBUM

There are a few attributes to my promotional poster, in which I feel as though will help promote and sell my album.
FONT AND COLOUR SCHEME- The font I have used is large and in bold, being the same as the digipak itself. This creates a link between the two and the audience will recognise and therefore buy the album as a result of the poster. Due to the font being very large, especially the name of the artist, it will be easily visible to the audience even from a far distance you will be able to see the name of the artist on the poster as it is the first thing they will read. As she is new and needs introducing to the world, this will let her audience know when her album is coming out, and when. The colour scheme used is the same as my digipak, showing continuity and linking the two together, being easily recognisable for the customer.
WHEN THE ALBUM IS RELEASED- I also decided to mention when the album will be released, as this is a typical convention of posters promoting albums. By stating when it is being released, my audience will be able to remember the date and perhaps pre-order or get ready to order on that date. It has been written in a light font against the dark purple/ pink background, being easily visible to the audience.
SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE- Due to my target audience being ages sixteen/seventeen and older, they will be young teenagers, who tend to use the internet and social media near enough every day. By adding Neve's website alongside the twitter and Instagram logo, which lets the audience know to follow her, this will create in more followers, who will tell their friends to follow her and so on. On these sites Neve will promote her music and other things such as merchandise, resulting in a successful sale of her songs, etc.
'INCLUDES HIT SINGLE...'- By adding this statement below the name of the new album, this will promote the single alongside the album too. This means that if someone may love that certain song, by knowing it will be on the album, they may buy the album, believing they will love the songs on there as well. I believe this is a good idea and can prove to be very effective.
WHERE TO BUY THE ALBUM- By adding these logos such as Spotify and iTunes, which are very popular amongst teenagers and young adults who stream music on these apps, this will promote the use of these applications which will also promote her music, for people to stream it on there.
LOGO OF RECORD LABEL- By adding the name of the record label and its logo, this will also be promoting the record label, who represents Neve. If the right advertisement is done, this will result in followers of the record label seeing advertisements for Neve's music, resulting in much more sales, and fans of hers.

HOW WOULD MY DIGIPAK DESIGN HELP SELL THE ALBUM

The design of my digipak is slightly simple, yet effective. There is a mention of the name of the artist, alongside the name of the album. I have included an aesthetic image of Neve, which shows off her beauty and personality to the audience. By her potential customers seeing her face on the front of the album, they are more likely going to consider buying the album, as they have an image of what the artist looks like, deciding whether or not they will enjoy her type of music.
This can also be said with my back cover. The tracklist included states the names of eleven different songs. By the audience looking at these song titles, they will make a decision on whether or not they want to buy the album. I made sure these titles sounded interesting and meaningful, about a mixture of relationships, love, freedom and questioning things.
By adding featured artists in the song titles, it will result in a wider audience buying the album as they will want to listen to their favourite artist's collab with Neve, then perhaps making them a fan of her music and so on.

WHAT ELEMENTS OF MY DIGIPAK AND ADVERT COMMUNICATE THE GENRE OF THE MUSIC VIDEO AND STYLE OF THE ARTIST.

There are a variety of elements in which link to the genre of Neve's music video and her overall styling.
The colours of the digipak represent a bold and unique person, which I feel is shown throughout the music video in terms of Niamh's clothing, makeup and overall aesthetic style in the video. Instead of just standing in the middle of a certain location lip-syncing to the song, I have added action shots which are sped up and slowed down of all the characters, including Niamh. These included some of her upset, thinking, staring into the camera, walking away, and going through images of her ex through her phone, then showing him do the same. This shows her style as an artist, being different in her portrayal of certain situations. Some other shots of Niamh in the music video include her posing in front of graffiti walls and in a tunnel, etc, not only adding aesthetic to the video but also letting the audience be aware of her urban style and r&b-type genre.
Her strong aesthetic and urban style can also be seen through the images shown on the poster and digipak, being unique and thought out poses.
The use of dark purple and pinks throughout my digipak and poster, alongside the colour of the text being a dark red to stand out, also connote the type of genre Neve portrays in her video, but do perhaps show a more feminine and girly side to her, as this is a photoshoot for her debut album, wanting to make a lasting impression on her target audience. The colours connote love and blue, sadness, along with white being purity. Linking this to the genre of R&B and indie pop, which are stylish and aesthetic.

In Order to make my products look effective, I used a variety of editing techniques. These were done on both photoshop and premiere pro.

NEXT SLIDE

As I have experience with working on photoshop, I decided to use this in order to edit both my Digipak and Poster. This included the editing of the original images and then adding text, colour and overall effects to the image as a whole.

NEXT SLIDE

Here are the front cover and back cover of my Digipak. In order to edit these images, I started off with the original pictures I took for them. I decided to enhance the features on Niamh’s face, taking away any blemishes and adding some more colour to her face, alongside darkening her eyebrows and eyes, in order for them to stand out, which was my aim in the making of my digipak. After doing this I added colour to the background of the page, excluding niamhs face and body.

NEXT SLIDE

Here you can see the original image for the front cover next to the final product. Originally the background was a white curtain, however, through my use of the paint tool, I covered it in a light opacity purple slash pink colour, as this was apart of my colour scheme which I stuck to.

I added text to the front cover and the rest of my digipak, in the shade dark red. This was to make sure it stood out.

NEXT SLIDE

Here are my two images I decided to choose for the inside left and right of my digipak. In photoshop I did the same as my front and back cover, editing her face slightly, being a typical convention of albums. On the image on the left I decided to add a personal touch from the artist, by creating a handwritten signature followed by a heart. I felt that this was effective as it makes the audience feel special and close to the artist.

NEXT SLIDE

For the disk, the same was done to it, including the adding of large, bold text, the background colour, copyright information was written, and my record label logo was added also on photoshop. For the copyright information I used a tool on Photoshop which allowed me to write in a circle. This helped me as it meant my disk looked much more effective and followed the conventions of a disk from most albums made.

NEXT SLIDE

Here is now my poster which I also created with the help of photoshop. The same was done such as the sizing which is a typical A4 page, the adding of the main image, text, etc. I took images from the internet which displayed logos such as twitter and Instagram and added them on to my page. Overall, after flattening each image I added an effect to each page. This included my use of the brightness and contrasting tool, highlighting and adding tones to my work, and the levels tool which enhanced the overall image.

NEXT SLIDE

Overall, I am happy with my use of photoshop and feel as though with my use of it, it has made the overall products much more effective and visibly pleasing and stylish for the audience.
