Step One: Make Arrangements to Meet With Your Student(s)

The first step is to arrange time (in person, teams, or even over email) to communicate your concern and give your student an opportunity to respond.

The goals of this conversation are twofold:
1. Share your concern (inform the student there is a potential problem with their work).
2. Give the student an opportunity to respond/ share information with you.
3. Collect information that will help you determine how to proceed next.

Don't accuse the student and don't make a decision in that meeting (it generally leads to escalating emotions). Think of the conversation as a "fact finding mission."

Simply end the conversation with something like "Thank you for sharing this information with me. I want to consider everything you've shared before making a decision. I will let you know what I decide."

A complete guide to holding that conversation can be found here:
https://tilt.colostate.edu/Integrity/FacultyResources/TalkingWithStudents/

After the conversation is over, you have a decision to make. After what you have learned, witnessed, or heard, do you still suspect academic misconduct might have occurred? If the answer is no, then you can end the matter with a short email to the student and grade the student's work as if nothing happened.

However, if you still suspect that academic misconduct may have occurred, it is time to use CSU's formal conduct process and complete an Academic Misconduct form.

You've spoken with the student and there was a reasonable explanation for what occurred. Or, you have spoken with the student and weighed the information you have, and there isn't any evidence that supports an academic misconduct accusation.

In this scenario, you communicate this to the student and grade their work as you normally would. You CANNOT still apply a grading penalty for academic misconduct. After all, there is no evidence that it occurred and no official documentation.

The incident ends here.

You've spoken with the student and any number of things happened:
1. The student admitted to committing academic misconduct.
2. The student denied committing academic misconduct
3. Something else.

Yet, after this conversation and weighing the evidence you've gathered, you still suspect academic misconduct may have occurred. In addition, there is some evidence that suggests it did.

About that evidence: you don't have to have a so-called "smoking gun" to move an incident forward. Creating an incident report essentially says, "There is enough evidence to cause me to have suspicion that something occurred. Because of this, it is important to follow the University's process, let a third-party (the SRC) evaluate the evidence, and make a decision."
