  • As a whole class, discuss and model using the first comic The Late Show.  
  • Have students infer in groups what they think is going on based on the pictures.  Have students share in their groups and call on groups to share their dialogue for each speech bubble.  As a class, decide on what each speech bubble should say.  (The teacher is completing the comic strip and students are watching. Teacher is modeling using a think aloud approach). 
  • Bring attention to the size of the speech bubbles and what that might mean, a large speech bubble means more text. Also, bring attention to a story making sense from one scene to the next by looking at what has been said in previous scenes of the comic/story.    
  • Once you and the class have completed the comic strip read the final product to the students practicing intonation and expression.

    • Discuss the repetitive language that occurs in the story.  Create an anchor chart with the repetitive phrases that occur in the story.  Bring attention to dialogue, ending marks, and quotation marks. 

    • Provide students with the 50 Below Zero response template. Have students discuss in their group or with a partner what they think is occurring in each picture. 

    • Students can then complete the story using the template on their own or in a group.  

    • An extension activity is to have students read their story in Flipgrid or Screencastify. 

    • Share students stories or allow students to share their story.  

    • Play the entire story for students to hear the ending of the story.

    • Use the graphic/writing organizer to orally state each section (intro, problem, solution)
    • Write the retelling of the story
